US Army "Great Seal" uniform button. It's the standard design used since 1902 and looks modern... can better be dated if you post a picture of the back of the button.

And - welcome to TreasureNet!

Hi. It's a General service button from 1902 used still today. If you shoot us a picture of the back you may get an approximate date. The "book" is the writing for Identification on the back. :) HHHH

I think it is more fun letting Jim handle the "hard to ID" buttons. :tongue3:

Welcome to TNet "thsfineday". A wealth of knowledge here.

the link that you sent me to was for a different button, mine is the size of a quarter and writing on the back which is very hard to read, can make out the word "newark" but there is more.

Yeah but, A great seal button is a "great seal" Button....We couldn't tell you any more because there was no pic of the back where the "key" for specific identification is. HHHH

The link was good. The Great Seal buttons come in several sizes, "One style for all arms and all grades, private to Lt. General. The only exception is the Engineer Corps, who are to retain their present design. Bronze for service and gilt for dress. The design is a copy of the great seal of the U.S." http://metaldetectingworld.com/05_photo_gallery/05_great_seal_but_1902/index.htm Without the pic of the backmark, we are only guessing. Look through this list there are several NEWARK button backmarks that may match up. Welcome to TN. :)
