Cain handle??

Found this in a vacant lot. It appears to have been smashed down like an acordion. Also had a piece of wood around the outside of the smaller copper. Any ideas?

Looks like it might be a threaded cap ferrule on a wooden shaft, made to fit into a threaded socket on another shaft, base, etc.

Looks like a paint handle for a roller. If you needed to reach higher you added another rod to it. Ours look just like that. Burdie

Might be the base of a flag staff that screwed into a socket but that's just a guess. I'm confused, what's a "CAIN"?
