Yea I'm not trying to down grade your find or nothing. I think it's cool myself been looking for one like it.I see some signal ones that are close. But wanted to show you another type that is close called a Carronades.Royal navy quit useing them in the 1850's but were still used it the civil war.But the main point was how they are cast notice how straight it's lines are were it mounts to the cannon cast all at one time or molded if you will.Yours looks like they slope towards the mount causeing me to think weld build up and then ground down. But no big deal It's a great item you have & maybe someone will come along & tell you what it really is.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

I would be thrilled to find that...regardless of where it was found.

Gotta love grandma. :icon_thumleft:

and just to let ya all know grandma says that there is ALL KINDS of stuff like that somewhere in the basement and she said that there are other old war items in the attic !!! cant wait to go rooting (shes 95 and she calls it old stuff !)

welding was done years ago but not electrically or with a oxy/acetylene rig. they would heat both ends in a small smelter and hammer them together. they did axes this way by adding a steel bit to a folded iron axe head. alot of axes found are not broken, the steel bit just rusted away leaving the iron.

nice find indeed, thank you very much for sharing.

p.s. tell grandma thank you too.

Cool! At first I thought you found a camera!

A nice piece to pull out of grandpas closet ! I am curious as to the diameter of the of the barrel ! This may give us a clue to the size of shot it fired ! I like it ! MaineRelic
