its 2 feet long or so and about 75lbs its the little one you would see on the upper deck on a swivel

With electrolosis that will be a museum piece :o

I agree electrolysis is the way to go on that piece. Nice basement find.

never ceases to amaze me what grandma has lying around :laughing7:
very neat :icon_thumright:

Yeah...Grandmas...wish I still had one of those...they sure are handy in a pinch when ya need a CANON! :headbang:

Weight and length might suggest it is a signal or salute cannon.

Or a bow cannon...They used to mount those on the bow of small (very small) ships exploring the rivers. Worked more for a one shot scare to clear out the Native Americans...

They were also very handy for close range precision shots, like taking out a helmsman, or a group of musket bearing soldiers. Ideally for any shot that needed to be taken at deck level.

It crossed my mind, but I think it a little big for that.

Looks a lot like a signalling cannon thats mounted amid ships...I would talk to a closest historical society to find out about any close shipwrecks. They may also help you have it preserved and restored....Great find :icon_thumright:

My guess is a Lyle gun for shooting life lines over grounded ships. Would explain why it would be on the beach and not underwater. Not sure if they made Lyle guns with Cascabels but I don't see why not. If they were trying to rescue a ship that grounded on a night with low light during low tide. It would be rather easy to place down the gun then in rush to try to save people the tide comes in then no more Lyle gun. Some were black which would be hard to see at night time. Again this is just a guess and possible theory.

Good luck on IDing it. Would love to see it after electrolysis.

i live in nova scotia the graveyard of the atlantic there are thousands of shipwrecks around here so the chances of finding out what one might be impossible

that sounds quite possible its bigger than the little ones you see on the deck but smaller than the "normal" canons on a ship how much do you think it would cost to get electrolysis done on it? its just such a odd size i would assume that it had a special purpose thanks for the theory

The Lyle gun would not be located on the ship but used by the Life Saving Station on the beach.

See examples: http://cannonsuperstore.com/lyle_cannons.htm

No sure how much it would cost to have it professionally preserved but it should be rather easy to do yourself. I would buy a plastic storage pin that would fit the cannon then look up directions online on how to build an electrolysis unit. I have a home built one for small items. I'm sure someone on T-Net will jump in and let you know how to build a unit for big items.

This part looks welded to me.If it is it's not but so old. Also it does not look to badly as far as rust goes.If it was mine I might would think about blasting it with maybe glass beads or something just to knock the little rust off and get to the metal it self. After that think about something to keep air from getting back to it.(a coating of your choice)
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

here is a pic of the area of the canon that may be welded its really hard to tell with all the rust but i dont think so unless its a real small bead under the rust
