I posted this in buttons two weeks ago and found out it was from the war of 1812.Still have not seen a button exactly like this one. It has no back mark and nothing written on the front like corps or anything. The cannon ball stack has only six and the others have more. I was also wondering if it is worth anything?

You're right that this button is not listed in Albert's. There is a provacative note in Albert's which says, "In a letter dated 22Aug. 1803 from PPS (Purveyor of Public Supplies to SW (Sec. of War) is this statement, " The artillery buttons are without stars". I don't know if this might pertain to your button or not, but it is worth researching.

It looks like an 1812 Artillerists button but with only 6 cannonballs.

That's a neat button :icon_thumright: If not in Albert's would this be a new ID and what does it take to establish same?

Could it be a button from hat strap?

Sounds like a deal ;D

It just doesn't have a civilian imitation look to it and it didn't get that feedback response from this forum. Reckon this button variety would have to be 'authenticated' by experts. What would the next steps be in order to proceed?

Just saying what it was worth to me(tongue in cheeck). In answer to the poster question.
I have no worries with it being circa 1812 Military.

RKin, I don't think the designers of these buttons put much weight in the number of cannon balls. They've been designed with as few as three. As your's is a smaller button, (and probably scarcer, as fewer were worn) it may be that the design for these was abreviated to fit the planchet. Here's a scan of an example I dug in Pennsylvania which shows the size difference between the two of ours. Besides the obvious differences in design, the planchet of mine is also much thinner than your's and the relief is lower, despite your's being a smaller button.

The difference is between the coat-sized and cuff-sized ones, perhaps? :sign13:
