Detector(s) used
Garret Ace250/Prospecter Bounty hunter(Backup)
I got up and went out the beach early today. I figured after the crowd I saw yesterday it would be a great morning to hunt.
Well, I wish I had pics to show you what I found...I found a stolen cash despensing machine!!!! In pieces of course. Pieces which I picked up to look at and see what they were. I realized what it was and dropped it like a hot potato.

I decided it would be a good idea to call the local authorities since I had turned it over and looked at the various parts before I realized just what it was, covering it with MY fingerprints. I had to wait for over an hour for a response and I was not greeted very friendly. I explained to them how I found it, (Duh I had my detector and headphones and scoop) and why I called. I did not want someone else calling them and them finding my prints all over the darn thing....I was then informed I had the right to remain silent...............ARGH.

Needless to say I was pretty hot about the whole thing and was detained for three hours!!! I am a pretty vocal person when riled, and I'll tell you all here and now that I was riled. They finally cut me lose and told me I had a bad attitude...Me response was simply this...I looked at the officer and said, "If YOU were out on that beach and found that, would YOU have called the police, knowing your prints were on the D@&M thing?". He said he probably would have... and I told him if I found another one I was going to bury it so deep noone would ever find it again. I then said goodbye and walked out. NOT A PLEASANT MORNING! :-[

Sorry if I seem in a foul mood but I am......

I bet in the future your laugh at this!

Life is full of stupid people it just seems most of them join the force.(My opinion)

Nash,
I would have done the same as you if I found that. Sorry to hear you got harassed by Barney Fife. Some of those cops are so big headed it's a wonder they can fit into their cruisers. >:(
Thanks for the post,
MM

then there was that time in TURKEY ::)

Man they cut into your detecting time >:(, that's just not nice. I understand why you called them and that was the right thing to do, I can't believe they took you in though, I think I may have filed a complaint myself. You are a good man, we know it.

Wouldn't that be jolly great for them if once a criminal stole something they'd hang out at the scene and call the cops to come on out? I wonder if they get a lot of that the reason they messed with you, Nash? They probably wrap up most of thier cases because of that scenario. WTH?
Get us the email address of the police station and we'll all blast them (verbally of course) for detaining you unjustly. Wonder if they've ever dealt with a couple a hundred angry metal detectorists?

King County, or Seattle PD?......guess it doesn't matter, they all suck over there. Be glad the Washington Deptartment of Fish & Game didn't show up, they probably would have written you a ticket for hunting cash dispensers with out a license & proper tag.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

rofl hunting cash dispensers without a proper license and tag.....FINALLY I am laughing about this! ;) Hopefully you are having a much better day today pea! ;)

I know you went through a few crappy hours , but I would think with your career background you would be used to how to deal with officers. I worked with EMS for fifteen years and came to know alot of the officers....some are oinks ... some are really great guys just trying to do their job. With everyone sue happy these days, I think the cops have to make sure they dot every I and cross the T's ....How many times do we read where the cops had the perp and let him go...maybe these guys were were just trying to do their job or the crime involving the dispenser involved a murder etc...........Or maybe Nash...just maybe.... they were intimidated by you and it was just that man thing where the Puny guy finally gets to controll the big tough guy ;) :)

That is crazy Nash..........here you are doing the right thing and that happens. Those officers must have been some real pricks. What goes around comes around. I can see one of them getting food poisining from eating a bad doughnut, or getting short-changed at the ATM.

Nashoba,

I"m sorry you were treated that way, I"v found that when the Police are involved everybody is a suspect, So it"s best not to get involved (unfortunatly).

Those cops probably worship Fearless Fife:

I would just like to say a few things here...

First of all I would like to thank everyone for their comments and being so supportive. Every one of you ROCK. You responses were very touching and humorous and lifted my spirits immensely.
I did have a bad day yesterday because of this incident, but today is another day and I always try to put the past in the past. I did what I felt was the right thing and have no regrets about that part. The thing I regret the most is that this is a VERY small town. It is a tourist community and those who saw me with the police obviously thought I was a criminal. Fortunately I will never see any of them again, so it hasn't tarnished my reputation as the good citizen I am.

The officer who responded initially was VERY young and made several mistakes in his assumptions. I tried to keep my cool for a considerable amount of time but eventually I got PO'ed. That was my mistake. What happened was wrong on their part, but eventually some blame was to be put on me as I got so angry that I started telling them off pretty badly. I never should have allowed my anger to come out verbally and calling him Barney probably wasn't the best thing I could have done :P ...I think this may be where Gypsys comment comes into play. I am no small guy and my temper can be a nasty thing.

Thankfully an officer that had actually helped me the day before came along and said...."Don't I know you?".
My response to him was pertaining to what happened the day before with a small group of mouthy tourists. He came directly to an altercation that was about three seconds from happening as he had witnessed it start. Thankfully I had an ally of sorts. He was VERY prompt in telling the younger officers that I was leaving and apologized for their behavior.

I apologize for getting on here and ranting, but will say this.....BE CAREFUL of the way YOU respond to a given situation. I am not without fault here but a man has his limits and I reached mine.

Thanks again to all of your for your kind words, and though it may be difficult, please try to respect police officers and the laws they do their best to uphold. Granted, there are a lot of them that might be asses, but we need them and our world would be very harsh without them...

EVERYONE HAVE A GREAT DAY AND HAPPY HUNTING!!!!!

sometimes doing the right thing is the hardest makes you think twice doesnt it

I always start off with total respect for an officer when I meet one. Most times I leave with total respect as well. Once in a while there's a doofus wearing a badge that makes you wonder. They do a tough job for less than enough pay, but some of them seem to just like having authority. Thankfully most all of them I have met in my town seem to be decent folks who are reasonable minded, fair, and are just trying to do their jobs.

It's just like any other profession...there are good mechanics and bad mechanics. I can choose which mechanic to take my car to. Ya just can't always choose which officer you want to deal with.

Interesting thread. Sorry to hear of your bad day Nosh. The good thing is that we learn from your misfortune.

I always think that in some metal detecting situations I could put myself at risk but that is life. Risky business.

Good luck and hope your next hunt is a peaceful happy one. :)
