Detector(s) used
Garret Ace250/Prospecter Bounty hunter(Backup)
I got up and went out the beach early today. I figured after the crowd I saw yesterday it would be a great morning to hunt.
Well, I wish I had pics to show you what I found...I found a stolen cash despensing machine!!!! In pieces of course. Pieces which I picked up to look at and see what they were. I realized what it was and dropped it like a hot potato.

I decided it would be a good idea to call the local authorities since I had turned it over and looked at the various parts before I realized just what it was, covering it with MY fingerprints. I had to wait for over an hour for a response and I was not greeted very friendly. I explained to them how I found it, (Duh I had my detector and headphones and scoop) and why I called. I did not want someone else calling them and them finding my prints all over the darn thing....I was then informed I had the right to remain silent...............ARGH.

Needless to say I was pretty hot about the whole thing and was detained for three hours!!! I am a pretty vocal person when riled, and I'll tell you all here and now that I was riled. They finally cut me lose and told me I had a bad attitude...Me response was simply this...I looked at the officer and said, "If YOU were out on that beach and found that, would YOU have called the police, knowing your prints were on the D@&M thing?". He said he probably would have... and I told him if I found another one I was going to bury it so deep noone would ever find it again. I then said goodbye and walked out. NOT A PLEASANT MORNING! :-[

Sorry if I seem in a foul mood but I am......

I don't blame ya a bit for getting pi##ed off !!! Sometimes it just doesn't pay to do a good deed. GG

I believe that this is the first cash machine ever found by a member.
Kinda spooky to find one of those. The cops should have handled it better.
Like, who's gonna break one of those open then call the cops?
Authorities don't seem to be very helpful or appreciative when someone tries to help.
And they wonder why?

Keep safe...

Sounds typical. It seems most cops have bad attitudes. I think it comes naturally after they've been on the force for a while or a day in some instances. :) Dealing with scumbags everyday, they sometimes forget that not everyone they run across is a scumbag. To protect and serve, not cop an attitude and judge. :)
BTW-You were read your miranda rights? What were they gonna do,arrest you? ::) Sound like a couple of rookies. After all that, you shoulda went to the station and filed a complaint against them. Here you are trying to do a good deed and you get treated like a common criminal. They wonder why citizens don't like to get involved! Idiots.

And what did they think you did? Steal it , smash it, leave it at the beach, run home, come back with your detector and call them? ::) I can just hear them, " You could of done that to cover your tracks" ::) Nash, I had the same thing happen, when I returned a brief case I found in a ditch. You did the right thing bud, and the next time something like that happens, you'll probably do the same thing, and if you get more idiots, you'll probably bite their heads off too. ;)

Bah! They have no idea who they are messing with Nash! I applaud you for your doing the right thing AND for your holding your temper! No wonder I admire ya so!

Nash: You kow you did the right thing even if you hadn't have touched it. Some cops are just A%# Holes no matter what. Be glad you didn't come upon the guys while they were ripping the thing apart altho looking at your posted picture you look like you can take care of yourself. Keep the faith man and HH

Yep, don't blame ya' one bit...

Sucks when you try to do the right thing, even if your prints were all over it at that point, just to have the cops harass you.

Sorry man...

This isn't meant as a stereotype, merely an observation. I've noticed, over the years, that many of your local law enforcement types enjoy power over other people. Again, not to stereotype, but the really smart police types aspire to something much more, leaving the locals scrambling for help. Around here, many officers are part-time in multiple departments, making them, essentially, mercenaries. These actions sound to me like those of intellectual midgets, which doesn't mix well in a power situation. I might hesitate to call the police myself, if I were faced with the circumstances you just described. I guess the lesson is not to put your prints on something! ;D

Nash:
Your story just reminded me of a friend of mine hunting the beach out in
Pismo Beach CA. a few years back. He found a black toy gun, not thinking anything about it he put it in his back pocket. Some lady saw what she thought was a real gun and called the cops on him. The next thing he knows is the beach has been cleared of people and the county SWAT team was all around him with weapons at the ready. Scared the crap out of him and embarrased the heck out of the cops.

Some times a good deed can go wrong. No ones fault, you called because you had your prints and they come assuming you might have called because you had taken it and might be acting the innocent bystander. By the way, I would have been riled as well!!

Nash,
A loooong time ago (1960's) friends of mine and I found part of the wing of a private plane on the beach in Seaside, Oregon.
The piece was about two feet by four feet. If we had turned it over to your officers they probably would have thought we had someting to do with the downing of the aircraft.
We did call the authorities, who came and got it. They were appreciative and professional.
I'm sorry your experience was not as pleasant as ours.

I'm so sorry that happened to you Nash. Every time I try to do the right thing it blows up in my face, so I know how you feel. And retaliation doesn't usually work either. But for some reason we keep trying to do the right thing anyway.
I applaud you and hope your day gets better.

Being a police officer has got to be one of the most difficult jobs in this country. Sorry to hear that you had all the hassle but I guess they had to follow procedure just in case your were the perp.

We have all heard the stories of criminals getting off on a technicality to the law even though they were guilty.

I think you have hundreds of character witnesses here that will vouch for you every day if you ever need it. You da man Nash. I hope the MD'ing gods reward you next time out with a big ole meaty diamond ring. Good luck buddy.

I think I would have done the same as you did seeing as though your prints were all over the dang thing.

Take care buddy!

It was not necessary to detain you. They could have simply prepared their report there and Took you name and address if any more questions were needed. Sometimes we just get slammed for doing the right thing ! Go back later > maybe you can find gold :) to make up for the bad experience.

Sorry about all the BS Nash....Send them a bill for 4 hour's of your time....Ridiculous!!!

You should see what you go through if you find a hand gun that was involved in a crime. My old hunting buddy found one while detecting and spent over 12 hours at the station answering questions and being accused of a crime. If you ever find one put it back and make it deep so NO ONE will ever find it again. Not worth the hassle for sure.

The day of the "Peace Officer" such as Andy Griffith is gone. They are now "Law Enforcement", and that is a whole different breed. Society and it's standards brings on this demand. Don't expect it to get any better either. I have a lot of friends who used to be in law enforcement (old meaning) and that is one reason they are no longer in it.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal... Dang, I would have been hard to calm down too. Once I found a ladies purse in the middle of the highway a little after midnight coming home from work. I went back and got it and found a drivers license, busted camera and a little money in it. I was going to try and look her up in the phone book but saw a deputy sitting at a mini mart and gave it to him. I asked if he needed my name and he said no. I expected to be asked some questions but he was very polite and said thanks and that he would find her and give it back. Hope things go better for you. Have a good one.

I would like to add one more thing though. I carried a badge on my chest for about 7 years and it was a demanding job. There's a lot of crooks out there that will pull every kind of stunt you can imagine. There's no excuse for the way you were treated but try to forgive them and go on. It is always in the back of their mind to thoroughly check out every situation just in case it is someone trying to cover their tracks. You did the right thing by calling them but it usually means having to sit a while for them to sort out the situation. Hang in there buddy.
