Detector(s) used
Garret Ace250/Prospecter Bounty hunter(Backup)
I got up and went out the beach early today. I figured after the crowd I saw yesterday it would be a great morning to hunt.
Well, I wish I had pics to show you what I found...I found a stolen cash despensing machine!!!! In pieces of course. Pieces which I picked up to look at and see what they were. I realized what it was and dropped it like a hot potato.

I decided it would be a good idea to call the local authorities since I had turned it over and looked at the various parts before I realized just what it was, covering it with MY fingerprints. I had to wait for over an hour for a response and I was not greeted very friendly. I explained to them how I found it, (Duh I had my detector and headphones and scoop) and why I called. I did not want someone else calling them and them finding my prints all over the darn thing....I was then informed I had the right to remain silent...............ARGH.

Needless to say I was pretty hot about the whole thing and was detained for three hours!!! I am a pretty vocal person when riled, and I'll tell you all here and now that I was riled. They finally cut me lose and told me I had a bad attitude...Me response was simply this...I looked at the officer and said, "If YOU were out on that beach and found that, would YOU have called the police, knowing your prints were on the D@&M thing?". He said he probably would have... and I told him if I found another one I was going to bury it so deep noone would ever find it again. I then said goodbye and walked out. NOT A PLEASANT MORNING! :-[

Sorry if I seem in a foul mood but I am......

Many years ago my dad took me and my grandfather fishing and on the way out i noticed what looked to be a mannequin floating in the water, i told my dad and we circled it and determined it was a floater. I wanted to call the cops and was asked if i want to spend the whole day at the Precinct, Well, of course not. There was nothing we could do, when we got back to the dock i anonymously called it in and learned a lesson.
Anyone remember Bernard Goetz?

Although I can Understand How you Felt.

I Don't Think I would have Even
Mentioned My Fingerprints to them.
In the First Place, Naturally you found it &
your prints would be on it.
Probably the Only ones still on it.

A cop with half a Brain would Know this.

I wasn't there to hear the Exact Exchange,
But Maybe the way you said it made you
sound like you were Covering Up for yourself.
Even So.

Sorry about your expierence.
Jeff

Nash,

Sorry you had such a bad experience. If all Pacific Northwest police are so quick to treat honest citizens that way, I finally understand why it took them so long to catch the Green River Killer.

When you get your water machine, you won't need to worry about leaving your fingerprints!

Yeah. I'd be in a mood too! >:( Why in the hell would anyone think that the crook that stole the thing would call in, report what they have AND hang around until the authorities arrived? ::) Make no sense at all. There are stupid people in this world, Nash, and you just met a couple of them today. Sorry. :-\

Nana

Jeez what a story I think If i find one I'll just leave it and pretend I dident see it, Were they Stupid or what?? I mean your standing there with a metal detector And you called it in, What a bunch of retardes

I think i would call the newspapers and tv stations...It would make a great story...May get you some sympathy sites to detect. You were trying to be a honest citizen and you got porked for it......They news would be all over it!!!!

Sounds to me like you handled it quite well.
I too have a low tolerance for .... well let's just say people who are full of themselves.

I've always been told "No good deed goes unpunished". I guess this proves it.

Sorry to hear about the hassle Nash.

One day a room mate and I were on vacation in Colorado, climbing around the rocks of Colorado National Monument. We climbed around a huge rock, and there on the ground was a pile of purses, with hotel room keys and credit cards scattered all around the purses on the ground. Had to have been over 24 there. All of the room keys were from local motels in Grand Junction Co. We thought about calling the police, but then thought our finger prints were on a couple of them since we touched some as we looked at them. We were from out of state on vacation, 2 single guys with long hair, driving a Van with Florida tags.................We left them where they were and drove off.....It had the word T-R-O-U-B-L-E written all over it......

I used to be a customer service rep for a major hotel chain. After about 3-4 years of it I developed a really bad, cynical attitude. I had the idea that everyone that called was trying to scam me. I imagine it's worse for a cop. Every call he gets is probably a bad thing.

Nash

I lived with a police officer for 18 years of my life. He was a miserable, mean and nasty person. He didn't mean to be it was just what the job did to him and I think a lot of his coworkers. Over those 18 years I got to know a lot of police officers and most of them had similar attitudes to what you describe above. Having worked with the public for over 18 years and most of the time the lower common denomonator of the public I can understand why police develop the attitudes they do. Dangerous job, poor pay, bad hours, people shooting at you, spitting at you, cursing you etc. But I don't think that is any excuse for any person to treat another like that!

Not too long ago a motorcycle cop here hit a van and I saw it happen, being a nurse I had to stop, BY LAW, and render assistance. He was in no shape to protest and I was sure to keep both hands on his head to help keep him immobile until the EMS people arrived. Well two of the city's finest show up jump out of their cars and pull their guns on me! Here I was trying to help an injured officer and keep him safe and immoblize his neck and they wanted to shoot me. And before anyone responds to this post, when you are using your hands and knees to hold a person's helmeted head still, there is not mistakening what is going on. I also identified myself as soon as they pulled up and jumped out and I repeatedly told them I was a nurse. Finally one of the yahoos told me if I did not move away he was going to shoot me, the only thing that saved me was that the ambulance arrived at that very moment. They immediately saw what was happening and told the police to back off. After the EMS took over I was very shaken and upset the police took my drivers license away from me and told me to get the h#$l away from there before they arrested me. I went to get my license later that day. It turned out the officer had fractured vertabrae in his neck and back and the only thing that kept him out of a wheelchair for the rest of his life was that I kept his helmet on and kept him imobilized until help arrived, not my words but the words of his Neuro-surgeon. I didn't even get a thank you from the department after the incident. I still stop at accidents to help but I think twice about it now.

Anyway I am only trying to help you out and let you know that others of us have been there.

Sorry man.

Having a father that is a former special police member I spent 12 years hanging around cops as a young adult. I found that 75% of cops are untrustworthy and are really unfit for the job. The other 25% are some the finest individuals you will ever meet. Since these yahoos busted your balls why don't go down to the police station and file a complaint. It won't do anything but their commander will get a nice piece of paper on his desk with their names on it. Plus if the really screw up later with something else this will leave a nice Little paper trail.

Man, I thought your story sucked Nash, but then I read Mastereagle22's story. Incredible. Some people think they are the only ones competent enough to do anything, and in that thinking, they prove themselves incompetent after all. Sounds like that's what the cops were like in these situations.

My friend and I were in a less-desireable part of town one night detecting a vacant lot behind a business where some construction was being done. We had permission, and had been detecting there at night because the const. crews were there during the day. We saw a guy carry a gumball machine to a grassy spot, hammer it open and stuff some of the coins in his pocket and walk away. I called the law on my cell, and they were there in a flash. 6 or 7 cars if I recall correctly. They asked the usual questions, and we resumed hunting while they went about looking for the perp and investigating the surrounding area to see where the machine came from. Before long, the cops bring this guy over and ask us to ID him. Yeah, I really want to point the finger and say "that's the guy" while he's looking at me. I would have anyway, but even though he looked similar, he had different color shorts on, so we couldn't positively ID him. At least we never got any feeling from the police that we were under suspicion.

King County, or Seattle PD?......guess it doesn't matter, they all suck over there. Be glad the Washington Deptartment of Fish & Game didn't show up, they probably would have written you a ticket for hunting cash dispensers with out a license & proper tag.

Sorry to learn you were hassled despite trying to be a good citizen. I could tell you stories about the experiences I've had with some rude police officers, but I won't. Instead, let me suggest one thing to you: WEAR GLOVES. I wear gloves whenever I'm out treasure hunting, and not just to protect my hands from rusty junque or druggie needles. I don't want my fingerpints on anything that could be claimed as personal property, crime evidence, or whatever. Wearing gloves has definitely spared me the worry of "what if" that's stolen property or "what if" that's a murder weapon? So I suggest all you guys and gals wear gloves. Get a good pair that fits well and is made of genuine leather. You guys may not like them at first, but I think you'll be glad you're wearing them when things like Nash's experience happens. Had he been wearing gloves, he could have walked away and never been hassled.

Well shoot, thats a bummer. They were probably just trying to make the tourists think they actually do something around that sleepy little town :D

Tomorrow's another day! :)

Remind where you went to hunt over there so I DON'T GO !!!! The police sometimes forget who is paying their salaries and more importantly they forget what their REAL purpose is...to serve the people, "serve" being the operable word !!!! What a bunch of A#$ holes !!! excuze my french !!!! Good on ya !!!
