So this 2 room…according to the map…was across the mine site…in a cave….
Did it hold anything…was it a cache site or just a sorta camp…in a cave
Hello rk85044,
Directly across the canyon , not more than 200’ from his mine.
I read somewhere a long time ago that the shallow cave needed a tarp to keep out weather from the north. (So the shallow cave faces in a northerly direction….. which translates to being located in a ravine/canyon wall that also faces in a northerly direction.)
The 2 rooms were most likely 2 areas with enough room for bed rolls and some personals.
So a shallow cave needing a tarp to keep out north weather. The materials for building 2 rooms would probably have been made of rocks, and stacked high enough to provide a bare minimal area of privacy. So rock walls maybe 1-1/2’ to 2’ tall. Maybe a common area for cooking/eating/playing cards, just next to the sleeping areas. 🤷🏼♂️
Probably a larger rock for use as a table maybe.
It would be good if the camp was close to water, as well as a place to keep their animals nearby.
I would expect to see all those things within a relatively small vicinity (like not more than 200’ apart from one end to the other.)
An optimal place for the animals would be somewhere between the hidden camp (shallow cave.) and his mine. Also, if it could be arranged for all three spots (camp, animals, and his mine) to be at or very near the same elevation or altitude, and a somewhat level pathway between them.
According to waltz, there were 3 caches.
The 2 smaller ones that he had already retrieved, then the big one just inside of his mine, before he sealed it up and covered it up.
Then supposedly he stashed his tools somewhere up on the saddle.
So, the hidden camp may have some personal artifact(s) from Waltz and/or his partner, but probably not gold or tools.
I think the camp was simply shelter for cooking and sleeping…. And sometimes getting out of bad weather . 🤷🏼♂️
There are other subtle clues that dictate how not only the hidden camp, but other locations of landmarks have to be positioned, in order for some of the clues to fit.
Ignoring any of those subtle clues, may inadvertently land a Dutch Hunter in the wrong place. It has happened over and over and over again since the late 1800’s 🥴😬🤔
Also something very important to remember,
The perfill map with the cave on one side of a canyon, and the tunnel on the other (tunnel was not at the LDM until after Waltz showed up) is in most cases, and I mean most cases, will easily exceed the 200’ distance between them , ruling out that map as anything to do with LDM.
However, many here have no issue tossing out clues that get in the way of progress … like in this case, the 200’ distance. 🥴🤷🏼♂️
Maybe even which direction the cave opens, or if a simple tarp could be used to keep out the weather from the north…. (I have not checked for that, but the layout doesn’t look promising.)
Just my opinions, and I don’t have gold ore in hand, so it’s just my 2 cents on the matter.
Sincerely,
Idahodutch
