Chesapeake bay winter hunting tips?

Hello fellow hunters. I was just wondering if any Chesapeake bay hunters have any tips or advice for hunting this time of year. Are most beaches sanded in? Are you more productive this time of year when you are out? Or are most beaches down to clay bottom? Any advice would be great. And I have waders for shallow water hunting. Thank you.

You aren't going into the water (or wet sand for that matter) with that Ace 150, are you? You need a good multifrequency machine for that sort of hunting. Check with OBN here on Tnet. He's hunted C.Bay lots.

Right now I am not liking what I see, the beach's I hunt are sanded in....I had one gold ring for the month of dec. I do know feb is more or less a no go month for me, just to cold air and water wise to have fun. Jan I may get out a few times.....If your not out for the next few months I really don't think your missing much and hopefully the surf gods will move some sand. I was out New Years Day last year and the water temp was right at 50F, I noticed today it is 39F, so best tip is to dress warm. We do have the Polar Bear plunge coming so that will be my next outing...But should have went today, ..52 degrees!!....Good Luck and Be Safe...

The sand hasn't moved off any of the beaches I frequent either. This is the season for farm fields for me. Unless we get a big blow from the NW and the water gets nice and low I am staying warm.

I've only have three n half years experience in the bay, and two years winter hunting under my belt....at this point I would say you never know since each years weather is different.

I was in the bay the other day with chest waders on. I brought the wrong gloves with me and only lasted less than an hour. There were targets to dig, though. As others have mentioned, sand movement is unpredictable. You just have to get out and explore conditions. Personally, during the winter, I just get out when the weather allows.

DJWEHAGE what kind of gloves do you use?

I have a pair of Glacier Gloves. Waterproof, with curved fingers and wrist straps. Only 2 mm though. I don't go deep enough in the winter to have my hands completely submerged, so they work well for me. They are also thin enough to allow the flexibility I prefer. Bought them on Amazon- around 25 bucks.

I use Gauntlet Gloves. They're insulated and waterproof to your shoulders.
