A pet that keeps on giving! Eggs every day! They eat out of your hands, eat the bugs out of your yard, and if you get really hungry, great roasted! Had one hen last year, she rode on the rear axle of my pickup @ 70 mph down the highway when I went to my buddy's house, (I honestly did not know this until we got back to my buddy's house after a day of MDing), she hopped back onto the axle and made the trip back home - crazy! ffd
 

lol. Love the mental picture of a hitch-hiking chicken !

When the oldest batch of grandkids were little we kept chickens just so they could experience all the good things that go along with having them around. They helped create lots of fond and funny memories. Now that the next 'wave' of grandkids is hitting 2-3 yrs old its time we get a few again.

It was cute - he tried all day to get close to the hen and her chicks. He finally came inside and asked if we could help make him look like a chicken so she wouldn't be afraid of him.........

For sure they do make great pets / and good watch dogs birds.

Black Australorps. We had those and Buff Orpingtons

I know that breed, Black Australorps, and Buff Orpington.
Australorps are in fact Austaliën Orpington, they are good egglayers.
