we have found about three of these, maybe four, this one is broke
i have another that has a broke handle
they are most likely childs toys but we may never know for sure
another fact that throws me off wondering is the 'rasp'(?) on the handle
some talk of a pottery tool usually gets shot down cuz of the small size
have a look:

hey thanks
i am open and appreciative to any ideas......one thing i can say is i don't mean to disagree but these are all solid bone and not fragile at all...i am thinking it may have been broke by farm equipment
things like this can maybe never get figured out

Those tally marks on the handle kinda make me think it might be some sort of calendar?

we thanks for the idea creekhunter.....much appreciated....bringing up an unusual item for input & discussion is one of the reasons for this forum and helps everyone and myself keep learning

...........believe it or not when i first laid eyes on these pieces 15 years ago that was the first thing that came to mind....................a toothbrush effigy!

Are you serious? I was only kidding about the tooth brush. It does look like one. I would have said tooth brush effigy but I figured they needed a tooth brush before they could make an effigy of one. Lol! It's a nice piece regardless of what it may be. Could it have been used for scaling fish? Can any wear or signs of it being used as a tool visible?

I belive that's a pottery comb.
They were used for melding the coils of a pot together during manufacturing...or decorating.

Could be a game piece? The notches on the handle would be ''Counting Coup'' reward marks.
Hair decoration! But of coarse the the notches on the handle would allow for a better grip.

Steve you find some great stuff:icon_thumleft: Just a guess but what about a comb for a child's doll, they did make dolls in some fashion and if that was it, that might be the reason the handle end is darker due to skin oil and the marks on the handle could be the age of a child. If not that I would go along with Olddigger and say hair decoration:icon_scratch:

Could be a hair pin. The dark end has a lot of use wear. Nice artifact Larson!!

great stuff mr larson, you know the fish scaler crossed my mind also, but maybe a thread keeper for weaving if there is such a thing.

no i am not serious, i was kidding also rusty

i should take a few of these to the ND historical dept and see what they say

well i ssould but probably won't

thanks everyone for all the great ideas

Im thinking something to do with pottery also. Just cause its short in length doesnt mean they couldnt put a handle on it. Interesting

Larson is it missing any pieces on the other side of the "comb", the other side of it?

My real guess would be a tool used in weaving.
