Chipped Limestone knife....

Single sided chipped net weight.

Net weights.

Here are some net weights...The bottom 3 are not limestone...lol(nether is the one 1st piece 2nd row)

I am sure that they did use Limestone more often then we think...Prolly not the 1st choice for many things tho.

There is lots of limestone in my area and they used it a lot but it deteriorates fast so most I find are from woodland and earlier periods super nice pieces thanks for the view!!!! Here is a couple

It was very easy to grind into shape handy rock for sure

I find it once in a while. There is so much of it in the creek. The outcrops are very big and the black flint grew in it so the Indians would chip it out. I wish I had my camera the last time I was in the river in my yak. There was 2 large nice examples growing in the Limestone. They were solid and wouldnt budge at all.

Great info rock !!

Nice net weights.
The same type were made here at some sites.
These are from an early archaic site and are made from hard sandstone and cochina rock.

...like this rock?
The sites I hunt are loaded with reduction waste from removing the outer limestone layer from chert.

I have a few just like yours Neo. I think they are pretty rare as it is not a common item and often doubted by those that have never seen them. I may try to post a few pics of mine on your thread if you do not mind.

I dont mind at all..We are all here to learn...And I think you are right..They are pretty rare. Most folk even collectors will walk right past'em,or toss'em out with the throw dirt.

That first one is really interesting! :icon_thumleft: The limestone from around here does not hold an edge. Cool Finds! Thanks for taking the time to share these finds.

Nice pieces Neo..........hope all is well............GTP(Chris)

Neo I found these on a site down in Alabama called High Bank. If there was a rock there they worked it to some degree. We often noticed the limestone pieces and after looking hard at one we started to see where they were crudely worked to a bit or edge. Most are broken and worn. We figured they were used as a quick made digging tool and once broke they chunked them. A expedient expendable tool.
Anyways I gathered some up one day to study and these are the pieces I brought back. I could easily pass on something like this but it was so strange to see worked limestone. I was surprised when you posted yours and it gave me the inspiration to share mine. I am sure some are questionable but that is ok. I am confident that some are worked used and discarded when broke.

Thanks!

Thanx for shareing those, and yep some do look worked from here.Just because Limestone is softer(some is veryhard tho) most folk think it could or would not be used.Sins it is soft,it could be worked fairly eseyly.Less work can mean more reward.
