I didn't find this today but quite awhile ago however I just found out what it is. Now this has been a cool find but now it's in the top five. I found it in Western NY on private property that was the town center from 1790-1878 and then a corn field. I thought I would share it with people that would appreciate it. Thanks for looking and HH

Can you explain why the title says CW. I've found a couple of similar cut out coin heads (no CW in UK) of various ages & I fail to see how you could tell 'when' this was done. Sorry...???

Cru, There has been at least one other of these posted on T-Net in the last couple years and attributed to the Copperhead Movement during the American Civil War. I guess because it is the head from a copper, although like you say, the heads have been cut out of other coins too. The Copperhead Movement During the American Civil War - Military.Answers.com

Yes I can explain. where it was found was the town square and the copperhead movement was active in the area. After some research with the local historian I found out the towns RR was a local hub for soldiers and that one day there had been a group of copperheads that had a small gathering during a march that the soldiers were taking to a local CW camp. Also this would have had to been made during the mid 1800's due to the fact that the train station was moved and the whole town was relocated shortly after one mile up the road they even rolled a church a mile on logs up the hill when the town moved and the place i found it was a corn and potato field from 1878- present. After the war a lot if people were ashamed that they had been part of the CH movement and no one would have walked around with this still on there neck after the war because of what it stands for in my opinion.

Very cool find

Great find and explanation. I imagine it took quite a bit of time to cut out with such precision.

Thanks

Thanks for all the explainations, I had never heard of that movement, it might have helped a few US people as well, not sure how well known it is. But at least I learnt something. I have no idea why they did it in the UK, I always thought it was out of boredom.

Really exceptional find, those are so rare, very few authentic Copperheads exist.
