Hi,
I came across the information that one civil war schooner, loaded with gold coins from Mexico and which headed for Texas, was blown away by a storm and ended up wrecked in the Caribbean. It was supposed to occur between 1864 - 1867. I am not expert in civil war shipwrecks and detailed civil war history at all, so I would like just to hear the voices of the experts in this Forum to tell me, if it is just myth or if it could be the truth. Thanks in advance to all!

By the way, my new book, "Treasures of Roberto Cofresi", was recently released and it is already available on Amazon.com. It is true story about the last real pirate of the Caribbean, Roberto Cofresi, and my personal hunt for his hidden treasures.

All the best,
Lobo

Hello Lubos. Long time, no write.

Encyclopedia of Civil War Wrecks. This is the only one listed as going to Texas and lost in Caribbean. Doesn't sound like your ship. The war ended in 1865, but there was a pretty bad hurricane in 1867. Can't find a ship matching your description, though.

General Rusk (Blanche). British. Iron side-wheel steamer,750 gross tons, 417 bulk tons. Length 200 feet, beam 31feet, depth 12 feet, draft 5 feet 7 inches. Built in 1857 atWilmington, Del., as a merchantman. Seized by the stateof Texas from the Southern Steamship Line at Galvestonin 1861. Converted to a blockade-runner. While en route toHavana, Cuba, on the way to Lavaca, Tex., the USS Montgomerychased the Blanche to a point where the blockaderunnerhad anchored, about 300 yards off MarianaoBeach, Cuba, 7 to 8 miles from Havana. The local Cubanalcalde, his son, and a Cuban pilot boarded the vessel toescort it into port. Two boats from the USS Montgomeryapproached the blockade-runner, and the Blanche’s captainran his vessel aground. Either the blockade-runner’screw or boarding Union sailors burned the vessel onOctober 7, 1862. A crewman and the Spanish pilot werecaptured aboard the vessel, but the rest made it to shore.Strong protests were made by the governments of GreatBritain and Spain over the violation of neutral waters bythe Union navy. Reparations were paid to Spain by theUnited States. Cdr. Charles Hunter, captain of the USSMontgomery, was later court-martialed, convicted of violatingSpanish territorial jurisdiction, and dismissed fromthe U.S. Navy. Thank you Darren! I was just thinking (may be I am wrong) that Civil War was fought in the high seas literally everywhere. South controlled the cotton, north controlled the iron. I heard there were cases that the ships persuaded one to the other till the shores of Africa, in England water, etc.

All the best,
Lobo

You're not wrong at all, Lubos. The war was supplied by many nations by sea.
