Coin counters are the biggest Pain in the Butt ever....

So when I first started CRH'ing about 4 months ago, I was just re rolling, or taking a bag to the bank loose and they would put it in my account 8 days later. I started using coin counters a couple weeks ago, and it has been nothing but problems. I will describe a few of the better ones here. First of all, I have probably used the coin counters 6 or 7 times, and only 1 time the coin machine was still working when i left. Every other time, it was either out of order, or jammed, or a teller had to put a million coins in the bag since it was missing the bag, which would take 20 minutes... etc. I think it might be easier and faster to just roll the coin. Here are some of the classics... First time ever using the machine, I had 1K in halves, I ended up walking out of the branch with 200 dollars left because the machine was sooo slow that I knew for sure I could roll them faster then it was counting them. The other day, I had about 600 dollars worth of coin, I get it all counted, and push print... beep, beep, murhhh, kkkk, tick, tick, tick, screeeeeeech..... (everyone in the whole bank looking at me like I had just tried to rob the coin machine or something). uh, sir, the printer is broken, and we cant give you your money until someone can get here and fix it which at best wont be until tomorrow afternoon. We will just have to call you to let you know that your money is ready. That was probably the worst, it is a bad feeling to walk out of a bank without the 600 bucks you just cashed in. My halves have jammed the machine so bad at least 5 times, 2 of those five times the teller just gave up and put the out of order sign on it... Today was another classic, the machine jammed so it would work, then stop, the work, then stop. Well the teller kept taking my coins that were jammed in the insides of the machine, and putting them back in the feeder on top (meaning they were getting counted again.). Because of all my terrific expiriences, I luckily knew exactly how much I had in my bag, it was $500 bucks, so when all is said and done, my ticket said $580... I told her, Ummmm, I know I had 500 bucks, so just give me 500..please. She even said, yeah, I was probably putting them through again... Then she proceeded to practically argue with me about how sure I was, and if you just want the 580....... Im like scratching my head at this point, and hoping that she will just give me 500 and let me leave. She did and it was fine but my god, she tried real hard to give me 80 bucks for free...... These machines are a pain in the a$$.

I was curious as to what type of expiriences you guys and gals out in CRH'ing Tnet land with the coin counting machines.... Please share.

The only time I have problems is when the teller tries to dump them all in at once. If they put them in slowly, it's a smooth process...and doesn't take much time. Typically I'm not in there more than 5 minutes and that's bring in $1000-$1500.

Maybe slow it down when you/they are jamming the counter?

I have been using the coin counter at least 1 time a week for the past 3 years. No problems at all except the 2 times it was broken, I have never broken it. My average dump is a large beach pail full of coins ranging from $75-$1000, usually $500 I would say on average.

My biggest gripe with the coin counter I use is that it will fill a bag while I'm dumping and I have to stand and wait until a teller finally comes over to replace the bag. Out of probably 10 times using the machine, I have filled a bag at least 7 of those times. It's embarrasing to have to stand there and wait for the teller but you can't just walk off and leave your coins in the hopper for the person behind you to scoop out.

I dread going to the counter if I can help it because I usually go on my lunch break and sometimes it can consume all my time standing in line.

On a lighter note, it is fun to stand there and dump 1k in coins in and have someone standing behind waiting with a small peanut butter jar full saying "you must have saved a very long time to get all that money." If only they knew.

PS. I have asked to buy the bags that fill up but it is a CU and they will NOT sell them.

This actually sounds like a good idea to me. How did you swing that?

I had trouble too at first with halves getting stuck in the counter. After a few jams, one of the tellers took pity on my and showed me how to feed them in slower so it didn't jam the machine. Haven't had any problems since.

Are you by any chance talking about Zions Bank? Because when I opened my account at Zions, I put $584 in Halves in their counter, and they said I probably shouldn't do it again because Halves are rough on their counters, so I started doing the bag sent to SLC method. But recently, I opened at MACU and they have no problem with me running $2k+ through their counter on any given day.

The problem is that you guys are probably talking about different kinds of coin counting machines.

I have used Coinstars for free in banks, and they are great, accurate, cull silver, but are slow.
And when they get full, they are dead for a few days until the maintenance service gets out to empty them.

On the other hand, Quick Change Machines that I have used are the cat's pajamas--they are really fast, but I have broken one before.

I have learned to feed ALL coin counting machines slow enough for their little metal brains to keep up. Even then they might just break. And if they do, there goes my plan for the day. I need to get my swing back NOW so as to get to the next bank to buy the coins I have ordered.

My biggest complaint is that the coin counter sometimes counts dimes as pennies. Typically if I put a box of dimes ($250) thru the counter and it will miss count 1-5 dimes as pennies.

The coin counters I use do not do that.

But the bags I buy are full of mis-counted coins (pennies in the quarter bags, ect), buttons, washers and all kinds of trash.

I just took come coins into W.F. one day, and the teller said, you know, you can just put these in a coin bag, and bring them that way, we will send them to the main vault, and they count them, and deposit the money into your account. It just takes 8-10 business days... I have since found a different bank that will do the same thing, they only take up to 72 business hours though. so that is better.

It is funny you ask.... I am talking about Zions bank. They are the only bank I have found with a coin counter that doesnt charge non members... So yes, all these stories are from Zions. I think I need to just find a different bank or C.U. and open an account to dump halves....

Bank Of America runs the same way except it is only two working days, not two weeks. They even give you the bags to put your coins
in.....
