Re: A First and a second for me at the same time!!!!

This is not a token, but rather a chinese coin. Nice find!

any idea what it says or how old it is??

Re: A First and a second for me at the same time!!!!

can I see a photo of the reverse? And if you wouldn't mind rubbing a little oil from your fingers over the high points of the coin and taking another photo of the front...that'll make the characters stand out a little more.

Chinese cash coin. Buckle boy's got it right and he'll probably be able to ID it for you too. I found one myself that dates back to the 1700's

Re: A First and a second for me at the same time!!!!

That could easily be two to three hundred years old. I found one this year that appears to have been from a dynasty in the 1700's. They don't date any more precisely than that, I don't think.

It is possible to narrow the dates of these down to within a decade or two in most cases. My oldest coin is one of these--and I think many folks have dug these before and had no idea they were that old. *I think* yours could date to the Ch'ing Dynasty--and more specifically Emperor Shih Tsu (1644-61).

After putting that "teaser" out there...if you'll post photos as requsted I'll be more than happy to finish working on the ID of your find later on tonight.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Re: A First and a second for me at the same time!!!!

I'm pretty sure I'm right, so I'm putting it out there. I feel fairly certain that this one is Emperor Shih Tsu, first series strike, and was minted around 1644 A.D. The reverse is blank and does not bear a mintmark.

Nice old one there! Now just think of how many hits you'll get if you change the title of the post to "COIN FROM 1644 FOUND!" :o

Cheers,

Buckleboy

Re: coin from the 1600's found updated

Congrats and thanks! I found a coin like this at a 1700s homestead, but just figured it was from the 1960s or something. Now I have to photo and post it. Will do so as soon as possible. Again, congrats on great coin and thanks.

My pleasure to help you! Unfortunately, these things are not that rare or valuable. Usually a couple of bucks in non-dug condition...even less dug. :-\ I bought a Chinese coin from 24 B.C. for a couple of bucks once when I collected ancient coins. So age doesn't equal value, I'm afraid...BUT this is a great piece of history...and it has witnessed much more than even colonial coppers have.

Cheers,

Buckleboy
