Confederate Army Officers Button/John C Breckinridge Button/ 1860's pistol

Hit the road for a short hunt with BBoy last week, he was visiting for 3 days and weather only permitted one hunt. We took off for a site that I had been eyeing for awhile but couldn't ever seem to get permission. Well the neighbor was home and let us hunt in her yard next door where another old site once stood. My first target was a 68 Rosie, we thought great :-\. My next target was the Confederate Army Officers Button with the H.T. &B Backmark I found one like it at this link valued at $1175.00 button #25.

http://www.civilwarbuttons.com/cscentrlist.htm

We kept diggin and all we could find was trash. Time to move on.

Next site I had already hit a couple of times but the finds here are spread out. I had yet to find any flat buttons here before but knew there had to be some somewhere. My first good target was the lead barrel. It has letters on it but I can't make it out. A short while later I dug an iron pistol barrel, will ad pics of it later. Next good target was a few flat buttons, then what I thought was a Half Cent. Turned out to be a John C Breckinridge Political Campaign Token. Found some info on it here.

http://museumcollections.in.gov/det...e&f=object_type&s=button,+political&record=79

Well a short while later BBoy pulled out a goodie. He dug an 1860's pistol missing the screw on barrel. He will be adding pics to the post later. Sorry I'm so late posting but we lost internet last week to a small tornado.

Happy Hunting Hill

Well, the banner nomination button doesn't appear to work--but I will nominate your droop wing button when I can get it to work.

Glad you friends got out to hunt a little HB & BB!! Very nice finds guys. That CS button with that backmark is pretty rare as it's not even listed in Albert's button book. I'm sure it's in Tice's book as H T & B Manchester made several CS buttons. I would never have guessed that BB found a pistol-LOL. WTG & HH gentlemen, Quindy.

You never know what's gonna show up under the coil do ya Q?

GREAT post, HB. I can't believe you dug a scarce Rebel button, you dog! :notworthy: That one button blows most other CS buttons out of the water. Great dig there! (It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime digs, especially with that backmark!) :hello2:

The pistol I dug is marked "Hero" on the brass frame. I will post dug photos of it when I am done with the cleaning (trying to preserve the iron hammer). Here is a non-dug example:

Hey man thanks, I enjoyed getting out with ya, let me know when your coming back. I'll hook ya up, just bring your own detector next time.

Outstanding hunt HB, the button is all that.

Re: Confederate Army Officers Button/John C Breckinridge Button/ 1860's pistol

Nice Confederate Staff-- Tice's [CS210A1]. Hammond, Turner and Bates Manchester backmark is readily available and nice backmark! Honestly for me, the John C. Breckenridge Token does it for me! A great Kentuckian Vice President of the U.S., turned Confederate General, and a very good one!

Well, its a great first one to get. It seems your banner button is broken as BB mentioned :icon_scratch:

Re: Confederate Army Officers Button/John C Breckinridge Button/ 1860's pistol

Well, the Banner recommendation glitch is resolved now. So I recommended your post. I hope others will do the same.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime dig. The best possible backmark for this button.

Cheers,

Buck

Re: Confederate Army Officers Button/John C Breckinridge Button/ 1860's pistol

One question HB how much do you charge for these hunts of a lifetime? Cause I need to start saving my money!! Way to go guys great finds keep on digging!!

Re: Confederate Army Officers Button/John C Breckinridge Button/ 1860's pistol

It amazes me that your Confederate droopwing button hasn't made the Banner. The rarity of finding it in the relic hunting world to me, would be like finding a 1909vdbs penny in the coinshooting world. the mint marks and backmarks can make a historical difference in rarity and importance.

Your banner button is working and I hope the historical and monetary value of your button will make the votes to carry it to the top.

You and BB are unstoppable HB.
Great finds. A BIG congrats on the rare button big guy. :hello2:
I just went through Kentucky last Friday and again yesterday. You live in a beautiful state. We ran up on that tornado in Lexington last Friday night on our way to Indiana. Had to pull over at Mt. Sterling until it passed by. Lightning was going sideways! :o Didn't see any cows flying through the air though, so that was a good thing. ;D

Great post. I vote BANNER too on the rare button.

Re: Confederate Army Officers Button/John C Breckinridge Button/ 1860's pistol

HB, Congrats on the Confederate button, just don't seem many of that type being found, my knowledge of the CSA relics is lacking so not much to add that others have not already said. Now the political token is special, never seen one of those posted that I can remember, so another special find.........

BB and his pistol, well, super nice that he could ID what the gun was, never found a hunk of a real gun other than the butt plates, and other attachments, never any barrels or complete hand grips that I recall. My son found a starter pistor that at first we thought was the real deal and also someone cut off most of the barrel of a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun and threw that hunk in a lake that he found when the lake was drained for dam repairs....

Doug ,that tornado is the one that went by me and it was scarey. It took out a big barn here on the farm and some trees. Internet was down for almost a week. Look me up next time your passing thru, I'm right off interstate 64, would be happy to take you hunting around these parts sometime.
Thanks for the banner vote,
HB

Thanks Don on the congrats and it's good to hear from you. I too like the Campaign Token ,1st one I have ever seen. We have found a few gun parts too but no whole ones till now, too bad the barrel is missing on bucks find. May dig it up there someday.

Wow! Sorry it took me so long to respond. You've got my vote. It would be cool if you could research that site and tie that button to a past owner.

Very Nice!
