I just got in the door and so excited to post this that i didn't even rinse and check the dates of the coin spill. Ive been wanting a US silver for along time and now i have some. I see standing liberties and barbers in the mix.i will post more pictures and dates later when I'm done cataloging all of them. They are mostly all quarters with some dimes and five cent pieces mixed in. I thought i wouldn't top my 26 silver Newfoundland coin find a awhile back but i did. They all were in a small area on a old driveway and the ground was packed hard. Took me two hours to dig them all out. At a quick glance they look to all be from late 1800's to late 1920's. Thanks for looking! [emoji2]

Congratulations on your find my friend, this will definitely be a tough one to top! :occasion14:
You certainly work hard enough for your finds, but most of us can only dream about discovering a cache like the one you found!

Congrats on making the BANNER,
Dave

Wow... very awesome find... great for you!

I wonder if there could have been some kind of winter park concession stand right there - people stepping up and buying fish and tea
or something - but the coins would have to be lost in some fresh snow (or I suppose tall grass ) for people not to be aware of the
losses . I think there may be quite a bit more around there !

Given the amount of rust staining I can not see how all these would not have been in some type of iron or tin container. No matter how much iron there is at the site it does not work that way, and anyone can look at their own silver finds and see how few were touching iron. The exception may be something really funky in the ground, but would be something I've never seen before. Given how few silver coins I dig these days I don't know if my opinion counts for much. :)

CRAZY alright.

I'm thinking that this is a collection of sorts....because

1, you've got almost every date of quarter (can) produced from 1909 to 1930, they didn't make them every year, your only missing 1912, 16, 17.

AND 2, it includes the 1915, and 27 key dates which would not likely be present in such a small (relatively) sample of "random" quarters. Yes I'm quite sure this was someones coin collection, based on those two facts.

Congrats on the great find, and banner recognition for it.

For the record so far my best was three quarters in one hole, and a big batch of silver is my #1 wish list find.

You may be right by a iron tin or something. So shallow and close to the salt water it wouldn't take long to disintegrate. I did dig out the odd little flake of rusty iron and nail pieces. You think there may be more coins being masked by iron? I do plan on digging the spot till its silent.

How large is the area most were found... talking the majority, say 80-90%? And was there much iron there, like a typical old site, or very little? (in the area with the coins)

I would say the area was about 4'x4' and was very little iron. Didn't even start hearing any till the spot was almost cleaned.

Well that makes like easy. Dig it down four inches, scan the loose dirt and the hole, and if you find more coins dig it a few inches deeper. (If there's no iron you would not likely have to go deeper) There's very little point spending time trying to squeeze out another signal when you can resolve it completely in under an hour. After that I would then detect around for additional stray signals.

Right on! [emoji106]

Now the question is if i find more in the same EXACT spot does it count on the grand total because it wasn't all found the same time/day?

As I said the staining I think suggests cache, and if that is the case it's always the plow that separates the coins and does make sense many might stay close, but I would have to think you'll find quite a few more outside the hot zone.

Digging down that area also serves a 2nd purpose because you might find the remains of what they were in.... So be a little bit more careful then normal if you are digging what you are pretty sure is iron. Even if you could find most of the can, or whatever it was, it would be cool to have... and prove no question it was a hidden cache.

Hell yeah.

It counts for however you want it to count!!

AWESOME FIND CONGRATS!

Congrats on a great find! If you'd care for a hand in re-checking the area, or a second set of eyes, just give me a call. Goes without saying I wouldn't expect to keep anything - all finds would go to your total. I'm just up the road a ways from you, and I love getting out to the Peggy's Cove area for a drive.

We are going to get out one of these days. With work and family my hunts seem to be last minute and random. Have you been out much yourself lately?
