I am looking to get a good firearm for beach detecting protection. Something concealed of course and can handle a the saltwater environment. I am not looking to submerge it as it would go in a dry box when I decide to hit the water.

Awesome story trdking. I know the part of Whittier that was referred to as the “acres”. Liquor store on the corner.
Bad area.

Dadhumanizer. Take classes on safe gun handling and gun safety. Get insurance and by all means, go to the range and practice, practice, practice. Because if or when it all comes down you want to be in control of yourself and your firearm. To help insure that, one needs to be familiar with their firearm.

I like my Double Action Ruger 38+P in a pocket holster. But it is definitely an up close and personal firearm.
My other gun is a 9mm Beretta PX4 Storm which I love to shoot because it’s accurate and fires as smooth as butter. It would be the one I would want to carry but it would pull my shorts down while I was detecting lol!
Best of luck!

Claire..... i dont think anyones afraid of the dark here. A lot of us hunt at night in Fl and we are getting more gang action and trouble makers. Me and a buddy helped the police just last year find a weapon he tossed in the water while we were hunting. Times aint like they used to be. Ive ran into some drunks as well as people who dont like us hunting and it can go South quickly. Most of us avoid engaging these people..... but it happens. Obscure beaches even during the day requires you to be away whats happening around you. 22 years in the military..... i dont carry a gun and im not scared, but there are times i believe i should have. The down side when carrying a gun is .... we tend to not take the flight route by ending the conversation quickly.

Water Pistol.

Plenty of Refills Handy, & No Permit Needed :coffee2:

I do not think being alert or aware to crime mapping and anticipating potential crimes of opportunity would fall under a fear of any sort. Most places I have had people attempt to mug me was on beaches in front of 5 start resorts, some even privately owned property by the resort and all in Liberal Europe where guns are often more owned by criminals instead of law abiding citizens who do not want to jump through all the hoops to carry.

Criminals that conduct such opportunistic crimes are not exactly pouring out of any brain trust foundation; just smart enough to put 2 and 2 together, meaning they see a person attempting to avoid people in the wee hours, said person has gear but may also have some good finds (especially in front of a 5 star resort), and they may have even thought far enough ahead for a point of egress.

I have had 4 attempts where I had just finished up for the evening at the local police station and left my agency wind breaker on with big letters that state Interpol and still they thought process is hey look, he appears to be about six foot six, armed and even local LEOs walking by on patrol are avoiding him and his magnetic personality.

Fact is the types conducting such crimes are just fools, and the best practice is preparedness and awareness, and if that means arming your self and following local, state or federal crime mapping to give the perception of confidence and awareness, then it will certainly go a long way in discouragement in crimes of opportunity against your self and others near you. Because if a perp is Hawking an area (not under the influence of something) then they sure do not want to risk getting shot or arrested, they do not want to risk a bystander testimony or intervention.

In most cases that perception alone is nothing more than a mind fook or offensive psy ops; like using a laser to punk out a perp or terry, I do not believe in lasers for rapid target acquisition but thanks to dumb films it really is a way to get their attention.

Rapid response recognition is not limited to just LEO, Troops and Agency.

Just my take, not trying to change your mind, just assist you in seeing another perspective, I really do not think that anyone here is in real fear, especially in Florida where LEO like to practice Battering Chicken.

Take Care mate,

for lack of a Better Word , 2 It's with Hoodies Were Cuddling up to each other
in the Morning Sun at A and watching me detect.
Because of their Hoodies I Couldn't say for sure what they Were.
But I got a signal That I had to Work at for what seemed like an Hour.
after awhile one of the Hoodies Walked up to me and just stood there watching.
Finally I Pulled a Can out Looked up and Said Can :tongue3:
It laughed, Sounded perhaps Mentally Not all there, And Maybe a Girl.
But as I said I Was a little Nervous which was way out of Character for me.

I Think it was because the Night before when the homeless come out at night,
allot of them wore Hoodies and Lower Mouth Masks.
I stared into the hood of one and all that could be seen through the Face mask was 1 Eye.
And in spite of me Smiling and saying "HI" all I got back was a Glare from that 1 Eye :laughing7:

But Seriously even in my Late 50's Local Kids 20's & teens gave me Nothing but respect at night
down there. I wasn't even afraid to let them Borrow my Cell Phone to call Friends
at what was probably 3 in the morning.

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. That goes for anything, not just a gun.

Dadh.....there are CCW fanny pack type pouches in different sizes and styles to fit your needs. After you get your gun, order a pouch you like for finds and fit for the gun and definitely practice with everything you Detect With taking it out and get comfortable with it.

I prefer wearing the vest myself. You can use a shoulder holster with it or there's plenty of pockets that are suitable and allow easy access.

I'm not scared...I'm prepared.

I remember being scared every day 1966 to 1967 in Vietnam. Nowadays I call it highly aware of my surroundings.

To be official it is "Sunshine Acres" And their was nothing Sunshiny about it. If you head west from the Liquor store on the corner and make the first right I grew up 3 houses from the corner on the right. I believe that liquor store is now a check cashing place.

Jeff that big wookie chick was going to have her way with you. LOL Regardless if you wanted to or not.

They're testing you and your reactions. Next time they may come up and engage in conversation while another scumbag sneaks up behind you. AC is full of tweekers

Is there any better reason to CC?

No fear here.
Less threatening places? I don't detect a site due to perceived threat level. Or live where I do ,or shop where I do ,or drive where I do based on perceived threat level.
By taking your advice and after getting painted in a corner of my bathtub clutching my detector trying to hide from perceived bogymen , then what?

No , I'll just be aware , and provide counter measures should this little boy's life be realistically endangered in my civil environment. The rest is just life as usual outside the bubble of trying to avoid scary people/places.

Claire do you carry health insurance, car insurance, home insurance, fire insurance, life insurance if so why are you so afraid? Carrying a fire arm is another form of insurance, I don't carry it in fear or hopes of using it, I carry it for insurance, insurance that I will have the means to defend my family and myself if ever needed. I'm not scared, why should I be scared, I'm armed 99.9 percent of the time with a .45 pistol, some times I carry more than one as is my right.

Every day people walk by you that are armed, you just are not aware. I carry in grocery stores, gas stations, all fast food locations, theaters, church, parks, beaches, department stores, I carry everywhere it is legal to carry. Under Florida law "no guns" signs carry no weight of law as long as you leave if your asked to do so by an employee, since they don't know I'm carrying I've never been asked.

Thanks RG. I have taken several gun safety courses over the years (have to when you are stationed someplace new every year) and do take my Glock to the range. But will increase to help adrenaline overreaction.

Three times I believe I was in situations where I was about to be mugged.

First time I used to work swing shift in Oakland CA airport. I was heading home and needed to stop for gas. As I was filling up a guy approached me and asked if I could help him out. I asked what he needed and he kept asking me to follow him to his car which was parked off the side of the station. I kept repeating what he needed. He kept asking me to follow him. I walked to the end of the pumps and noticed he was hanging back. I noticed movement in his car. I told him I was good and backed up to my car and put the handle away. Got in my car and as I was driving away the other man got out of the car as I left the parking lot.

Second time was here in Florida. Again at a gas station. Guy comes up towards the pumps. I saw him and he said something that I couldn't understand. I asked what he said and he repeated it but still I couldn't hear what he was saying. I asked again what he needed. (Thoughts of what happened in Oakland are screaming through my brain) clearly he asks me to 'come over here.' I removed the gas nozzle from my car and held it out in front of me and said. 'You come here'. He smiled and backed up. I told him I couldn't hear him and he turned and walked away. I finished pumping my gas and left.

Third episode... I was removing some advertising from the street out front of our business when a guy walked up and asked me for the time. I told him it was 4:55. I knew this because I always take the signs down at that time. He asked is that the exact time? I told him yes that is the exact time. He said are you sure? I said that I was positive. He asked if I had a cell phone to prove it. I looked at him square in the eye and said "yes I have a cell phone and that I was positive what time it said" he stepped towards me and asked if I could check it. I told him I was not going to and backed away. He asked again and I told him I was not going to check. He finally turned away. I thought this conversation was very strange until I talked with a friend of mine who is in law enforcement and he said I could not have handled it better. The guy was hoping I was going to look down to grab my phone and that was when he would have attacked.

At no point was I at a dangerous place just met potentially dangerous people.

If it's people you're worried about then Glock 26 all day. Nice and small, magazines are plentiful and cheap and all the Glock 9mm mag sizes will fit in it.

I run into a different problem in the woods often where i want a bigger rounds for any animals i might not hear through the headphones that might want to try a taste of human out but i don't want just 6 shots from my revolver and a big semi hangin off the hip all day digs in when you're climbing around up and down. I've met some real crazies way out in the middle of nowhere too.

1 more thing. Put regular hollow points in it. God forbid you ever had to use it and now you're in court trying to explain to a judge and jury that you're not bloodthirsty and why you had to have "Exxxtreme Penetrator!" or "RIP" rounds that cost 1.50 per bullet in your gun.
