Hello All,

Rodeo Recon and I headed out to a picket post site of mine and hit the fields hard this afternoon. First off, I found the back to a CW cuff button (two piece). Unfortunately the front was completely gone :( but it does bear a Scovill backmark, along with another word I can't quite make out. (Anybody have a list of Scovill backmarks for cuff buttons during the CW years?) Anyway, we started diggin the usual .69 cal three-ring minies. Rodeo was cleanin' house on the minies, and stoked to be finding these nice, hefty bullets.

We also got two .69 cal round balls from the site:

I then got an "iffy" signal in the picket post field. After I cut the plug the signal still wasn't that good. I broke the plug in half and swiped the plug sideways under my coil and the machine sounded off--a GREAT signal this time! I broke the plug in half once again, and a coin dropped out. The coin had been perfectly on edge in the cornfield. When I saw it, I was expecting an Indian Head since there was so much dirt on it. I quickly realized that it was WILVER! Side note: As much CW hunting as I have done, I have never found a CW-era coin in a CW camp. Diggin buddies have--and I have frequently been standing nearby and watched them pull old silver out of CW sites--but I have never been lucky enough to walk across one. Here are the photos of the coin:

I couldn't believe it! It was a Seated Dime. I couldn't tell much about it until I got it home. Here are the before and after photos:

This one is easily the highest-grade seated coin I have recovered in the past decade--Now that's a SWEET coin! :)
Here are the before and after photos of all our finds from the short hunt. I put some of the old nails we found in there, although we dug quite a bit of other iron out of the site--gotta try for that cannister shot! (Kindafoundabuckle already found one in this field)

A special thanks to Rodeo Recon for taking such amazing photos on this hunt! Bravo! It was great to hunt with you again, bud!!

So far we've found over 50 pieces from this picket post--making it the most productive one I've ever found. We've gotten six "mushrooms" from shoulder scales, a strap end, half a button :-\ , the Seated Dime ;D , a knapsack hook, a cannister shot, a tiny brass buckle, many pieces of camp lead not included in the total, a pistol ball, a sword belt hanger (?), and over thirty-five dropped, pulled, charred, or carved .69 cal. minies and round balls. The site has been quite exceptional so far--and there's still more to find. While hunting some small CW campsites I have found much less than what I've already found here.

Nice finds Buckleboy...Congrats on the seated Dime
3 ringers are nice as well,Do you know from what era a 4 ringer would be?..they are a bit longer and the nose of the bullet is rounded not pointed like the 3 ringers in your pics.

Re: PICKET POST GOODIES--SILVER!

Wow, couldn't ask for a better coin ! The liberty is plain as day in the shield ! Nice finds, those big ole .69's sure are fun to find. Suprising how heavy they are.

Re: PICKET POST GOODIES--SILVER!

Great Stuff. I have some letters written home by a friend my GG Grandfather who was in the 47th Alabama. He mentions in one of the letters that he is sending home a "Yankee Dime" for his little girl to wear around her neck. I guess he found one at a C.W. Camp also! You did good!

Unearthed--I don't have any idea what era a four ringer would have been from, unfortunately. Do they look similar to the ones Montana Jim is finding at his eagle button site? I have found a four ring CW bullet--it was a rarer variant of the Ringtail Sharps. That was ages ago huntin' in Virginia at a campsite. As far as four-ring minieball-shaped ones, that's outside of my area of expertise.

Nice job on the recovery, and having the patience not to wipe it in the field. That dime is in beautiful shape!

Plehbah--IThank you for your comment. I really appreciate it. Just a tidbit of information here: I never field-clean silver coins anymore--not even Mercs or Roosies. I use a small camel's hair make-up type brush lightly on the coin while at the same time keeping the water running HARD (and the plug in the drain ;) ). Sometimes I let them soak for a while first if the dirt is caked on them. Then I just coax the dirt off the coin gently under the running water. I have looked at coins that I've cleaned in this way under high magnification, and I can't see any "whiz" marks at all, regardless of the angle to a light source. This is just a habit I got into after noticing the type of damage I was doing to the coins by field cleaning them. I figure if the coin has waited for me patiently underground for a hundred years, the least I can do is give some patience and restraint back. Besides, ya never know when you're gonna find a beauty like this one.

Sorry for my rapid-fire posts. (I'm still stoked from the hunt.) I was just researching the little brass item Rodeo Recon found (see the last photo above)... I thought it looked familiar and I told RR to hang on to it. When I got home and started looking, I remembered what looked so familiar... It appears to be half of a broken scale slide. ;D

lovely dime -- good stuff

very nice finds William...wish I was there to be a part of it!!! Let me know if you ever want me to join, I haven't been out in weeks. I'm actually getting used to the ACE 250 though...and would love to hunt one of these sites!!

By the way how deep was the dime? Was there a lot of trash on the site? I WANT TO GO!

The dime was about 4 inches deep, but it was on edge. There is only iron trash on the site, except for an occasional beer or soda can.
