Dad's "Cache"

Took my daughter to the folks last night for dinner and my Dad and I got to talking about his Navy days. For some reason or another the subject turned to old coins. He told me that he kept a bunch of "oddballs" that he found interesting. This was news to me because he managed to never mention this before. My mother didn't even know about them (my father is the kind of guy that when he puts something away for safe-keeping - he forgets about it until you remind him - a good thing in my book for the most part :D). Needless to say, he disappears for five minutes and comes back to the table with a small wooden box and three old envelopes. Turns out he has approximately twenty dollars in wheaties (I'll be sorting through them this week) and some old U.S. coins. There are also a few old Canadian coins and Cuban coins (any help with their value would be greatly appreciated). I apologize now for all the pictures - told my Dad that I would shoot them individually for recording purposes. Pretty sure they're sized correctly. This is my first post here on T'net but certainly not my last. I actually registered back in '07 and had ordered an Ace 250 but I had to put my life on hold as I started a "battle" for custody of my daughter Izzy. Thankfully, I now have sole custody of her, and she very much enjoys coming with me on our little relic hunts. I will hopefully be getting a detector soon and my daughter will be getting hers for Christmas. Thanks for checking this (my first official post!) out. Looking forward to seeing and sharing many more! Happy Hunting to all...

These links are to parts 2 & 3 of this post. More pictures of coins - any help on the foreign coins is appreciated...

Re: Dad's "Cache"

Welcome to the forum! ;D
You'll have fun going through 2000 wheaties, but even more fun when you get out with a detector
Good luck

Re: Dad's "Cache"

Thanks for the kind words Bling! That's what I love about T'net - lots of support given by lots of great folks. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't dying to get a detector already! "Chomping at the bit" would be more like it! The hardest thing for me is deciding what model to go for...

Welcome to the hobby!

Many TreasureNet members have discovered that the quickest and easiest way to find GOLD AND SILVER TREASURES is to hunt the playgrounds of America's parks and schools. Thousands of metal detector users have already amassed piles of old coins and jewelry already.

Get out there and find your share.

Happy hunting, and here is a picture of your quarry:
Many thanks... :occasion14:

Re: Dad's "Cache"

Welcome aboard DD-777...
Your father has some nice looking coins there. I look forward to seeing more of your post.
As for a detector, cheap is always best in my book ;D although I did break down and get me a Fisher's CZ 3D which has gone up in price since I purchased it,,, Not sire I could even afford one of them these days... It doesn't really matter what type you get so get what you can afford and have a good time with it. I hear a lot of good things about the Ace 250. They're a pretty good little machine for the price.

Here a website that might help ya get an idea on coin values. Not sure how accurate it is, but it will let you know which coins to look for... PCGS's Price Guide

Good luck to you and your daughter, & Happy hunting~

Many thanks! Been thinking about the Ace 250 or the DetectorPro Headhunter Pirate. If anyone owns the latter I'd love some feedback on it. As far as the coins go - I'm taking the 1881 "O" Morgan to get looked at today - I've been scoping out some sites online that have the same coin in similar condition for sale at upwards of seven hundred dollars. We'll see...

Re: Dad's "Cache"

Looks like you're raking it in without a metal detector! :o

I always give this piece of unsolicited advice to new metal detecorists...get a pinpointer if you don't have one. You won't want to leave home without it.

Hope you get a MD soon and find more treasure!

Many thanks for the advice! I've been a relic hunter/junk diver for as long as I can remember - I just have an affinity for all things old. Been itchin' to get a MD for awhile now though to see what else I can pick up. My mainstay collection-wise are my antique and vintage cameras (any photographic equipment for that matter). Collect everything from still cameras to OLD slide projectors and 16mm and 8mm movie cameras. Things were just made better way back when (and with much more style).....

Re: Dad's "Cache"

Let me also welcome you to TNet..about the value of your coins, the best way to find out is see what folks are "willing" to pay for that coin. I usually go to ebay and see what they have been selling for in order to get a realistic idea. Here is one that is close to the one you have... http://cgi.ebay.com/1881-O-MORGAN-S...ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
Btw, those are nice looking coins. I have had several detectors and still have about 3 too many, but no mater what I get, I'm not going to get rid of my Ace 250. It is a killer on coins and with the sniper coil it works wonders in trashy areas. Whatever you decide to get, just get out there and use it. Will be looking for many more posts from you. GL

Re: Dad's "Cache"

Before going through all those Wheaties, get yourself a good magnifying glass or maybe a jeweler's loop (loupe). Your eyes will thank you for it.

Nice coins, and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the info! I spent a great deal of time last night on the PCGS website and found the value a bit astounding. Too good to be true I figure. As with my collection of cameras - you almost never get what they're "worth". I dont think that I would sell any of those coins anyway. To hold them in your hand and to think about all those years gone by - even if it sat in someone's piggy bank for fifty years - there's still history in each one.

You can't have HISTORY without a STORY... ;D
