Larson I am glad this history is being kept alive & passed on. It's amazing to me how attitudes towards Native Americans still are so tainted. & here in my sweet "Christian" community, it extends to any one of "color". I don't understand the racism & hate we humans wrap ourselves in. I talked to a Chinese student that stayed with us for a bit, & was stunned to hear the hatred towards Tibetans. They are reared to believe they are "no better than dogs". It is a part of our human psyche that needs to be obliterated & I believe the only way to do that is teaching our children. It all starts at home, & even if the community one lives in has different views, just giving your child a good example & explaining the falsehoods & teaching the truth is a step in the right direction.
Sorry I could go on forever on this subject.

Thank you for the links. they are eye opening.

I had the opportunity to purchase an old tavern tray, the type used to carry several beverages at a time at auction a few years ago. The picture on the tray depicted the victims ready for hanging. It was pretty old, and a collector out of Denver bought it if I remember correctly.

that's interesting.......but i think it would be too spooky for me......it must have been worth a few bucks

I understand your feeling that way Lars. I had funny feelings about it too. But it was such a rare piece of little known history semi-local history, that it had the interest of many that were there. And yeah, it brought pretty big bucks, it was in very nice condition.

yup i believe it
sure is funny that in school all hey say about the 'great' lincoln is that he freed the slaves

i mean no disrespect to anyone but personally i feel.......well you know how i feel

This is a great post Steve, slaves were treated bad but the Native Americans got done real bad and I mean real bad by our founding fathers.

Thanks for sharing! :notworthy: That's quite a sacrifice and commitment on those that are riding in memory of those from an injustice from the past.

I live on the trail of tears many a sad ride but in honor of the brave mean and women who were the true Americans. Thank you Mr. Larson.

Thanks for the history lesson, didn't know about that.

This is a sad story, no denial. However, I feel like the first couple of "chapters" to this story is not being told. Perhaps, a 14 year old child would not understand that her loved ones were capable of the absolute opposite of love. What caused the natives to go to war? They weren't a breed of pure evil. In fact, she speaks highly of some of the natives. ?? We all know that every story has 3 sides. Interesting read and thanks for posting it!!

The Trials & Hanging | The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862

What a sad time in our nation's history.

This link states that over 300 men were sentenced to hang, and Lincoln reduced it by 90%. Still a terrible atrocity, but it could have been worse.

Don't misunderstand me.....after a war between 2 nations, the victor should not put the vanquished to death when they surrender.

No one should have been hanged, I'm sure both sides committed terrible acts against the other.
