I was thinking for Summertime, very dry weather, a different type digging tool may be needed. Rather than a round hole with a small hinge flapper, why not have a rectangle shaped digger. Maybe a 3-1/2 inch back with 2-1/2 inch sides (all sharpened) and that would leave a full 3-1/2 inch hinge and the grass wouldn't die. Just thinking out loud.
