Do You Call Ahead Before a Road Trip?

So far I've only tackled boxes of halves but it seems many here are having success with road trips to multiple local banks. Apparently some of you are calling ahead to each bank to see if they have anything interesting. If you do call ahead, do you ask to speak to the head teller? What do you ask for specifically? Thanks in advance for the help.

Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. When I do, I just call and ask if they have any half dollars. That way I can get an estimate of how much money I would need to buy all the halves, and see how much money may be left over to get other coins.

I think it really depends on how much mileage you're going to cover and what kind of relationship you have with the tellers. For me in Los Angeles area i can drive down a couple major roads by my house and in a 5 mile radius have access to like 50 + banks so I usually dont call, on top of that with silver at 45+ now the teller might say, ya we have 5 bucks worth and pocket the the 2 silver after checking lol....I know I have a friend thats a teller and he exchanges his money for silver.

i usually call, order a box, and then pop in on other banks in the area.

At $4 a gallon, I think I'm going to start calling more banks ahead of time.

I prefer the element of surprise. Give's em less time to pilfer the silver.

Hmm i rarely call for halves because i dont like to bring attention to halves. In fact i usually ask for another coin type before asking for halves so i look like a coin collector instead of a half collector.
Besides [or more importantly] how many times i ask for halves in person i am told we dont have any when another teller says oh yes we do. When on the phone and they say we dont have any its harder to ask "could you ask the other tellers?"
