Do You Ever End Up With A Pocket Full Of Rock's ?

I don't know how you folk's are. But there are times when I go out looking and I find this artifact or that rock that look's interesting and I stick the artifact in one pocket or a hunting bag and the rock in another pocket, first thing you know you have a pocket full of rocks to look over when you get home. So I guess the question is how many of you end up with a artifact collection and a interesting rock collection also.

allways. I try to pick up a heart shared rock for my wife everytime to calm the "you missed dinner again" beast. Also any fossils or just anything i dont see everyday.

I used too, I've known the time I have had my joggin bottoms that weighed down, I have had to keep pulling them up on the walk home.
Or should I say draggin my ass home, so tired after a 4 hour hunt, walking up & down those tobbacco fields, up n down up n down, makes me tired just thinkin about it. But the more experienced one gets, i figure the less we are likely to drag everything back home..
It was fun though & good exercise..

I don't know I have been it a while now and still drag a lot of stuff home.

I used to bring loads of interesting rocks home until I started catching a lot of flak from my wife. ;D ;D It's hard not to bring cool looking rocks home out of the fields!

That is one thing about my wife she does not mind the arrowheads, tool's,scrapers, metate & Mano's, or the interesting man altered or used rock's, she is a 30 yr. retired history teacher so that helps a lot. All she says is just make sure you have a place to put all of it so it is displayed properly. So I try to keep everything in order.

I used to bring almost every piece of flint and any cool looking rock I found until it got to the point that I had box after box of "rocks" that were just taking up space so I put a bunch of them around the flowers at the house and a bunch in the fish pond and I took the rest up to a spot I hunt and dumped them in a ditch line beside the field. Now, unless it's a nice fossil or an actual artifact it stays right where it lays in the field or I'll see if my huntin' buddy wants it and if he doesn't then it stays.

Oh yeah, I've got this belly bag I strap on when I hunt, and I put all sorts of flint and novaculite rocks/pieces/chips in it to clean up when I get home and see what I've got. I keep a lot of the worked pieces or pieces with edges, and lately I've picked up a lot of broken arrowhead pieces, 35 in one spot just yesterday. I label the bags of where I've collected them as you never know when you'll find the rest of one and can put it together.

So I'm getting this big pile of flint reject pieces along with crystal and fossil rejects. Probably blow somebody's mind when they find it in a couple hundred years. ;D

I just started hunting this year and have already stopped bringing home anything that was in question. I've just got a gallon bag full of flint that I don't see me doing anything with. I'm coming home almost everynight with notta (I still need to find my hot spot). It's fun just getting outside and walking with my head down. " Rock out." :headbang:

When I get married I will wait for my hubby to come back from hunting with some good home cooking. While he was eating, i would rifle through his finds & pick what I wanted..lol..

I've only been hunting since april or may and I put every flake I find in my pocket. Also I keep any piece of flint I see. When I get home and go through it I toss most of the flint pieces unless it is a material I haven't found before. As for the flakes I still keep them. It allows me to see the different materials that the people used back then. Just from one farm I have 13 different materials. I think this is amazing. All the flakes from each place goes into a bag dedicated to that place.

Maybe when I have a few years under my belt this will end but for now I'm still fascinated.

Re: Do You Ever End Up With A Pocket Full Of Rock's ?

I first hunted when I was like 7 years old in a cornfield with my parents. That was 43 years ago. I still pick up anything of size that has good knapping on it to study at the truck or boat and discard if I do not want it. I do this because for many years I chunked all brokes and no telling how many scrappers in the river. Earlier this year I found a solid round thin green stone platter. I figured it was natural and skipped it across the river about 8 times. I regretted it as soon as I let go. But it was like 12" and kinda big to carry. But it sure flew like a Frisbee, lol
Now I wonder what it was. I bet i have thrown away a 100 hump back and uni faced tools because I did not know better.
I have learned to give things a second look,,,,,,,, except for that platter thing :dontknow:
Some people I know buy and sell everything they have and can instantly give a price of practically the insitu if it is not perfect or has a step fracture they will hardly bend over to pick it up. To each his own. Maybe when I become a pro and get older I will quit picking up and hauling out 50 lb packs,,nahhh.

I keep interesting rocks, fossils, questionables, and anything worked. I've stopped picking up every flake and pocketing them unless it's different or unusual material. Sort of use those as a reference.

Tn. wonder what the greenstone platter was?
