Do you think it is okay to revive old threads?

I wanted to know if you veterans of this forum think it would be all right to go to the archives of the forum to identify some unidentified things from several years back? I think that if someone can identify something it is still good, even after so many years. I would rather have my coin identified after 5 yrs. than never identified. I may do this, if you guys accept it, during summer break. Then I can have a lot of time. I believe that it is alright to revive 5yr. old posts only in the "What is It" section because it could be useful to the person.

And perhaps some threads were actually 'solved' but no green check was put up; so where do you start?
There are many solved posts with no green check. I tried over the years to remind members but I failed in my attempt to get every solved post properly marked.

We need a different system. I proposed that an x amount of votes will also post the Green Check. I think perhaps 5 Charter Member votes should do it. And of course the OP can do it.

There are threads at this time on the board that are already solved that need checked.

No interest can be because no one knew what it was at the time, and the post sunk to oblivion.
Makes complete sense to me. Nothing wrong with an old post being bumped back to life as long as it looks interesting enough to "you" whomever "you" are. Interest lies in the eye of the beholder.

I am now starting to look through all the pages of the archives of the "What Is It" forum. New ideas are also appreciated on this thread.

In the past Marc responded immediately to any good ideas hence the reason the old formatt was near perfect.

The new owners dont seem to have the same outlook and most new ideas are not considered.

We need to get all the solved threads marked as such but there doesnt seem to be a system in place that works and I am no longer reminding members. You can search the old threads and bump them up. I used to do that but sometimes there is no input from the OP. It is kinda cool to solve 4 year old items. I usually PM the OP to tell them and they are usually overwhelmed and grateful to have their unknown items remembered and solved.

Its a funny thing. There was a nice member who I will not name that was continually trying to pass my post count. Well I dont give a rats azz about my post count but I siad if he is trying to build up his posts, that he could help me remind members to mark them solved. Well he wasnt interested in helping not even once. I thought that was funny but maybe its just me.

I think an "Unsolved" category would be great (Go Breezie!). Even though I'm not that good at it, trying to find out "what it is" for me (and I think many others as well) is considered a "treasure hunt"!

Not sure of the parameters though....by age of post (only those posts X months old are eligible)? By "expert" (Charter Members, like Big Cypress suggests) opinion vote? A combo of several factors?

Wow TH Im impressed. I thought nobody was reading this. It seems you are putting in a lot of time work and effort here at the new TN trying to improve and keep everyone happy.

Yea it seems to me that half of the posts are not being marked. But I no longer have time to remind people sorry.

Thanks Big C, contrary to a few opinions, as always I do try to help as much as possible.

I have presented your ideas to the admins on the Moderator Board, I will let you know status as soon as I hear....

Its not that we don't care, but there are hundreds of posts a day, very hard for us to read them all, plus we get reported posts we have to check out as well as dozens and dozens of new members each day, we check their ips and email address through several programs to weed out spammers.... take the amount of spammers that get through and multiple them by 10 if we were not doing this...

On top of that we also have to moderate and edit the members who insist on breaking the rules with language, politics or inappropriate posts, and then some members quote what they posted which then has to be edited as well...

There is no way you guys can read every post.

If I see something that will help solve an old item, I will search out the old thread.

I think its a great idea. I have revived two threads in particular, at least twice, yet they remain unsolved. I will have to dig them up again...

If you are solving an unsolved seems fine. The problem with necro-posting is that most of the time it's just some random post that someone want's to add a smily face reply or other inane reply to someone who no longer is a member.

Yes that is a problem. I only put replies that are important. If I am confirming what other people said, I will not post, but PM the person.

Dredge up a post if you know what it is, not because you think someone else might.

Ok, thank you. That's what I will do from now on. I will still reply if I have a slight idea about the object.
