Yes, they were doing (cleanup work) & disturbed the plug. They were lucky they weren't swept over the side of the mountain. Water from the mine traveled through waterways for hundreds of miles.

It was sampling work, not cleanup. Now there’s a big clean up operation which we are all spending $$$ on via the govt.

They were trying to get the mine ready to pipe water to a water treatment facility. Do you know how long the mine was plugged? I think it was closed in the 1920's. Over 3 million gallons of water laced with heavy metals was released by mistake.

Except it wasn't a mistake.
The EPA wanted to build a million dollar treatment facility up there along with forever monitoring and they were having trouble selling the idea. So they pulled the plug and let her rip...now they are getting their facility. Before the EPA inserted themselves in this situation, the mine owner was managing the discharge and it was within allowable limits

Absolutely ridiculous. We know the guy who is responsible, we know he knew what the dangers were, and we know he was going against the orders of the guy who he replaced. Maybe I should try to get a job working for the EPA - seems like you can get away with almost anything!

They can and do get away with anything. The sooner you realize this the longer you will keep your hair haha. They do what they are told like anyone else, now pay those taxes!

Yes, try dumping over 3 MILLION GALLONS of waste water contaminated with heavy metals into a creek or river & see what happens to you. They would hang you from the highest tree.

If it isn't grown its mined...Those monuments were created via over use of the Antiquities act.

Mining rights aren't sold. ( by the Gov.)

I actually doubt that. It was just mine water out of a hard rock mine, not placer. Any gold would be whatever crumbs might have been on the mine floor. Plus, according to the EPA all of the sediments from this spill have been washed away and the river has restored itself to its pristine beginnings....if you believe that sort of thing
