I live in a house that was built by my great grandparents in 1947... although they dug a basement for it and filled in all around the house, I still have a wonderful place to hunt right outside my backdoor. Directly behind my house is an old house that is somewhere around 150 years old or so. My great-great grandparents lived there at one point, my great parents lived there for a while, my grandparents lived there until 1980... and my dad grew up there....
My grandfather was an avid coin/ring hunter.... he was the only person in our area to have a detector in the 70's...he scoured the entire property;esp. the old house. In all, he found only a few wheaties. He did manage an IH that was laying on top of the ground where the eaves drained. A few years back, I found a Merc that had worked its way to the top of the ground. It was a 40's if I remember correctly.
My wife and I moved here in Jan. this year, and my grandfather passed on Valentine's Day. He was always so excited when I would find anything here because he had searched so many hours. At one time, he buried 2 clad quarters trying to set his model in to go the deepest it would... he never found the quarters. I have spent many many hours this year searching this area. I have found lots of junk.... but since April, I have found a 1913 and 1921 Wheaties..... they had me jumping for joy...... but tonight, I tried some different settings on my XLT, and found this little jewel.... 1917D Merc...... only 1 1/2 inches down..... somehow I think my grandpa is looking down from Heaven smilin..... sayin " I spent all that time huntin.... and you found what??" He also would tell me"Gas is so high, why drive all over creation to hunt when you have just a good of place as any in your backyard." I am a believer in never giving up.... keep hunting.... keep digging... it will pay off eventually....
