Today I found this penny near some picnic tables at a local park, and on my way back to my house to detect elsewhere I wanted to post it to see what you guys think.

I'm not sure if it may be an error of some type,so I figured maybe someone here could shed some light on it.

The first pic shows the face of the coin, words are really hard to read(liberty,in god we trust, and the date) to me it looks like the date is 19?? but its all blob/blurred pretty much same w/ the word liberty,it seems the edge all the way round is folded over

The second pic shows the reverse it is a bit more legible but clearly shows that the edge is folded over.At the bottom you can see the words ONE CENT shows through the folded over edge and the same goes for the united states of America at the top.

Third pic shows a side view of the penny which has a rounded edge (*unlike the flat surface on the side of a regular penny*)also when I did a drop test on the table it doesn't have a ring type sound of regular pennies usually do,this penny has a lot more of a dull sorta tone

When I was swinging the MD in the area where I found it, wasn't really registering a definitive tone(pretty much all over my read out pulltab,penny,s-cap,nickle)and never locked on.When the detector finds a penny it always locks on the 1cent on the read out without fail, was right on top of the ground in a grassy patch.

Thanks to everyone for looking
~Shawn~

Is it gold ?? It could be plated with something, or maybe somebody tried to cast a penny with some other metal(for a pendant or something). I found a bunch of weird plated pennies while roll-hunting, even a gold one, so who knows.

Looks like it was spray painted or something because the dates and the other text are filled in.

If it was stamped by the mint I would think it would be more clear.

that is a shrunk penny, some sort of mechanical work flow there..............

It could be a mint error. If it is it looks like a greasy die error. How deep was it...did your clean it...if so..with what. it's a nice find. now lets find out what happened to it. :D :D :D :D :D :D

looks like it was on it's way to becoming a coin ring. They painted or dip coins in gold paint all the time for so called special collections. :)

Its definitely not spray painted,

it has a copper look to it w/ a slight pink tinge(so its not gold)

on the surface front and back where the edge is folded is pretty rough w/ scalloping(so I dint think someone was trying to make it into jewelry)

It had a little layer of dirt on it and only rinsed it off in warm soapy water

It was on the surface in a patch of grass and depth was bouncing to and fro.

I took the pic with a web cam sorry it isn't the best quality, but its all i have at the moment, and it explains why it looks gold(web cam color adj. are off)tried to get it as natural as i could

I've seen that type of texureing look before... like an acid bath. That's it... I think...? It leaves a yellow stain too. ???

It looks like it has been plated or dipped. It's still cool but I would concider it a damaged coin but hey it's just penny so it's no big whoop.

geesh thanks :-[

thanks to all for taking a shot i appreciate the effort,I'm not saying it's ultra special but it is unique none the less.I'm gonna wait and see if anyone else replies with any other ideas then depending on how it goes I may take it to a coin dealer and see what they have to say.

thanks again

I've seen those come out of clothes dryers, especially commercial ones.

Can you weigh it? Looks like a possible double blank stike possibly??
Cool find either way, great find, keep em coming!

Take some measurements too while you're there, diameter and thickness.

Cool, find!

I have one similar but not "dug"
The edges look folded over and the whole coin looks like it was smoothed out like clay.
