Ok, so I had a pretty hectic day detecting. I thought today was going to be a great day. I kinda did like 40 min interval checks on different property to see which would be my best. Well, first I was at a run down house no bigger than my bedroom and I found 1 decent signal, a charm of sort. So, I continue detecting and walk up on a HUUUGE ground hog which scared the living sh*t out of me (come on, when your not expecting things to move everything is scary). Then, when I make it to my second house I run into my first ever bumble bee problem. Man, those things don't play no game. I dropped my shovel and my detector and ran (I had to ok, there were a bunch of them) and waited about 30 min for everything to calm down before I went back over there grabbed my stuff and ran like a UK player when they finally get a change for a touchdown (GO CARDS). But my question to everybody, how many of you have almost WRECKED your vehicle trying to look at what you thought was an old foundation while you were traveling down the road? I've done it twice now. They say third time is the charm ;D ;D

Good post, I will admit to veering off to the side whilst scoping out many a cellar holes and stone walls that I happen to see while driving around 8)

I can't lie. No I haven't. I go slow enough so that I won't crash.

About 3 near wrecks. I have since learned to just keep going until it is safe to turn around and scope it properly.

By the way, next tim the bee's attack, DON'T DROP THE SHOVEL, WACK EM AS YOU RUN. (and don't forget to scream like a little girl)

Yes I have. I scraped the side of my van on a tree the other day looking when I should have been driving. I can't believe I told this to anyone. I still can't stop LAMO about what NC-Joe said about scream like a girl. Good luck and HH to all.

Man, I find myself looking through the woods for Earthworks and trenchlines ALL the time. There are spots where I live where they are everywhere. I try to keep one eye on the road and the other on the woods ;D ;D

LOL... :D :D ;D I don't know how many times I have done that... too many to count...

I am always scouting for new places to hunt... I've been out with my sister in law and I think she hates to hear me say time and time again - ohhh - that looks like a good spot...

I was taking her out for a while - but, she doesn't have the best luck and now she doesn't want to go out hunting with me anymore... I guess that's just more stuff for me to find...

I got into a bee's nest yesterday while repairing a fence. I ran away like I was on fire and peeled off my shirt which had a bunch of them on it. I got stung about 5 times. Now they itch like poison ivy.....not fun! >:(

I just throw it into 4-Wheel drive and keep on keeping on...Really I just take an address # down and go from there, most time's the place has been hammered but it's never hunted out....Cool post....HH!!

i got the bee thing down to a science from woods huntin,, first sign of them (usually on the glove that does the digging) i grab my tector, run 30 feet, drop the tector,( they usually stop there,, noise ) go another 30 feet kill whatevers on me.. wait a few minutes,, go back to the tector,, if they're not all over it , i grab it and forget about that spot...

this seems to work great for yellow jackets,, out of 7 nests hit lately only stung 4 times... 2 times each time..;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

All the damn time...3rd time's a HARM!!

I don't recall ever comming close to wrecking, but I'm always veering a bit while sightseeing. My wife yells at me when I'm on a crowded highway and I'm looking at an old cabin a mile to my right. But I have to agree, my attention is more on historical potential than the road.

As for the bees, well I really wanted to hunt under an old tree that had a beehive in it. They never attacked me, but they were swarming me with increasing numbers. After about 20 minutes of growing fear, I got the heck out of there. I waited until winter early morning when it was near freezing to go back to that spot. It was much less scary.

Ive gotten stuck in the sand on the beach when out detecting. I also got stuck in the mud going way out some dirt road into a field to detect around the southern-most passage grave ever found. It's about 10 miles from my house and virtually unexcavated. It's also over 3,000 years old. I've clipped a few stone walls as well. You know those pictures of hedges you always see along the sides of our narrow Irish roads? Well, they all have stone walls underneath the hedges.

Yep...I almost did the yesterday...the real problem is when you veer into oncoming traffic while scouting. Drive safe!

Lemme put it this way....it is absolutely true that yer scoot goes where you are lookin. ;D

This hobby has definitely turned me into a distracted driver too. How many times do I catch myself saying, "That looks like a spot that I'll need to check out". It drives my husband crazy ::)

O yeah it has happened many times My wife yells at me all the time, My buddy Mike R. even had his licence taken away by the state for 90 days because they said he had so many small accidents, They called him a Distracted Driver and I have to admit He is, I hate driving w him (sorry Mike)

After ignoring warnings from my friends, I ventured alone into the New Jersey Pine Barrens in search of some old foundations. My friends said "never venture out there alone, and make sure you have a winch." Well needless to say I ignored there warnings and after a 3 mile hike to get cell phone service to call for help, and waiting 2 hours for the help to arrive, and after spending $150 for a tow out of the mud, my Jeep still smells like the Jersey Devil himself took a dump in the back seat!

I took the photo with my cell phone after unsuccessfully trying to jump to the bank of the road!

I usually pull off the road. It is much safer. :D

You can cover a lot more ground detecting from the car. The tricky part is steering and swinging at the same time. Also, stick to dirt roads.
