I had an awesome day today at the 1830's CW property. I finally was able to join the "Barber Club" with a 1906 "O" Barber dime. Yaba-daba-doo!!! I was hoping for an 1800's silver coin this year, but I'm VERY happy with this find. It only took me a year. :'( I also found two CW bullets, and a nice heavy mans ring with Indian design. All of these finds were made on the side yard that I have hit once before. The ring and one of the CW bullets I found right in the same area that I dug the CW Eagle belt plate a few weeks back. Must have been an active area? After today's hunt, I can see I need to pound that area a few more times, as I missed some decent finds.
I also found a military dog tag which was a first for me.
A great day indeed. I think the mojo between BDoo, Civilman, and I is working. ;D ;)
Here is the rundown of today's hunt:

*A 1906 "O" Barber dime. This is my oldest U.S. silver coin ever. According to my coin book, I think it would grade out at about an F12, since I can see all the letters of "LIBERTY" on the headband. The back has excellent shape detail still. My 2003 coin book shows an F12 as $40.

*A beautiful silver men's ring (heavy) with an Indian design on it. No markings inside. I cleaned it up and it came out beautiful. It fits me, so I may wear this one.
Any idea of it's age? I hope the same guy who lost his sword belt place lost this too, that way it would be CW era. ;)

*Military dog tag with "Frank Perkins 343405097 T42 44 O".
Any idea of it's age or how I could track this person or his relatives down so I could return it?

*Two CW 3-ringer bullets. The smaller one has a flat bottom. What type bullet would this be?

*Sunoco "Antique Car Coin Series" token with a 1918 Cadillac Landaulet on it.

*Round piece of lead with letters on it.

*A harmonica side piece with "Sousa's Band - Made in Germany" engraved on it.

*An 1800's lock front cover with an eagle and "W.W. & Co." on it.

*Asst'd other relics. Any idea what those two pointed pieces are? I've found one at the other farm property I hunt too.

So many questions, so little time. ::)
Thanks for looking and have a safe and happy holiday season.

So you finally found a Barber...one HECK of a year for you, buddy! And what a nice dime to boot. Some really interesting items coming out of the ground for you lately. Nice work!

Regards,

Buckleboy

Thanks BB.
This month of December has been a great month for me. I posted my 2007 finds last week thinking there was no chance of finding a Barber this year. I'm glad I was wrong. ;)
Any idea what kind of bullet that smaller one is?

Great looking dime! It may even grade VF if you take into consideration the New Orleans minted coins were notorious for weaker strikes. The lead round thing appears to be a bale seal used on various things like cotton bales. Nice going on the Civil War bullets too....looks like they may have been drops, I would be searching that area real carefully I will bet a uniform button or two will show up too.

Thanks Steve. The CW encampment was very close to this property (about 1/8 mile) up on a hill close to a creek. Most of that area has been covered now with a parking lot and apartment complex. I was told before that happened, people were finding pistols, cannon balls, and bullets by the handful. I wish I would have been detecting here about 10 years ago. :'(
Thanks for that info on the seal.

In the early '60s, I was in Fighter Squadron 74, on the USS Forrestal. In my division were 2 guys named Frank Perkins. One was from Ohio & I think the other was from North Carolina. Please let me know if your Frank Perkins (if you find him) is one of them.

Thanks from the other Frank in the Division

MM, you've been tearing it up!

Good work.

Happy holidays
Ken

The dog tag is an oddball. The "T" numbers apparently indicate a tetanus innoculation in 1942, boosted in 1944. "O" would be blood type. Your 71 year old guy would have been 8 years old in 1944. The number is more likely a social security number than a military serial number. An issue dog tag of that period would indicate whether the bearer was an officer or enlisted, the service arm (Army, Navy, etc.) and probably religious affiliation. My guess is a custom civilian novelty item made for non-military personal use.

MM, those are some excellent finds in my book. Congrats! You had a fantastic day MDing.

Your going from strength to strength.

WELL DONE.

All you need now is a Cortes & your finds will go through the roof. You couldn't pay me to use another machine.

Good thing about upgrading is you can go over all the same areas again & pick-up the ones that slipped through the net.

great hunt for sure !!! a BIG congrads on the barber !! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Congrats on the awesome finds and hunt! Keep us posted on the ID tag. HH, Mike
