I had an awesome day today at the 1830's CW property. I finally was able to join the "Barber Club" with a 1906 "O" Barber dime. Yaba-daba-doo!!! I was hoping for an 1800's silver coin this year, but I'm VERY happy with this find. It only took me a year. :'( I also found two CW bullets, and a nice heavy mans ring with Indian design. All of these finds were made on the side yard that I have hit once before. The ring and one of the CW bullets I found right in the same area that I dug the CW Eagle belt plate a few weeks back. Must have been an active area? After today's hunt, I can see I need to pound that area a few more times, as I missed some decent finds.
I also found a military dog tag which was a first for me.
A great day indeed. I think the mojo between BDoo, Civilman, and I is working. ;D ;)
Here is the rundown of today's hunt:

*A 1906 "O" Barber dime. This is my oldest U.S. silver coin ever. According to my coin book, I think it would grade out at about an F12, since I can see all the letters of "LIBERTY" on the headband. The back has excellent shape detail still. My 2003 coin book shows an F12 as $40.

*A beautiful silver men's ring (heavy) with an Indian design on it. No markings inside. I cleaned it up and it came out beautiful. It fits me, so I may wear this one.
Any idea of it's age? I hope the same guy who lost his sword belt place lost this too, that way it would be CW era. ;)

*Military dog tag with "Frank Perkins 343405097 T42 44 O".
Any idea of it's age or how I could track this person or his relatives down so I could return it?

*Two CW 3-ringer bullets. The smaller one has a flat bottom. What type bullet would this be?

*Sunoco "Antique Car Coin Series" token with a 1918 Cadillac Landaulet on it.

*Round piece of lead with letters on it.

*A harmonica side piece with "Sousa's Band - Made in Germany" engraved on it.

*An 1800's lock front cover with an eagle and "W.W. & Co." on it.

*Asst'd other relics. Any idea what those two pointed pieces are? I've found one at the other farm property I hunt too.

So many questions, so little time. ::)
Thanks for looking and have a safe and happy holiday season.

Congrats on your pretty Barber Dime and may your next silver one be from the 1800's. You got a great mixture of finds, sure got to be happy about that. I like the Harmonica cover, it is a good display item for sure.

The Dog tag, well, that is without a doubt a legit one from either WW2 era or Korean War. A 71 year old would be old enough for WW2 :) but for Korean War era, just on the edge, so that may be the right Perkins but perhaps it is not.

The numbers are not SS#, that did not even start until years after I joined the military in 1965, so that happened much later, the notch is of the style from the period I mentioned. The dog tag is a super find and it would be nice if that Frank Perkins Gypsy found is the right one.

Don,
Thanks so much. It looks to be legit from the July 1943-March 1944 era according to this site too:
http://home.att.net/~steinert/us_army_ww2_dog_tags.htm
If you notice the name "Frank" comes first on the tags from that time period instead of the last name. The next series would start with the last name.
Again, according to that site, it appears to translate to:
July 1943-March 1944
Army Draftee
Third Army Area
Fourth Corps. (NC, SC,GA, FL, TN, AL,Miss, LA)

I hope I can find the guy.
Thanks again Don!

Tom,
I hope so. I better stop wearing it. ;D
I'm going to try to find out what some of these symbols means.

What a great hunting spot! You totally scored with quite a variety of finds..the place looks like it's just loaded with history. Good luck with finding the owner or family of that tag.

Excellent stuff there sister....love it all!

Gypsy,
You are awesome Girl !!! I just called and spoke to the wife at the # above. She said her husband Frank was sleeping, but he was an inductee in the service. He is 71 years old now. She sounded very excited, and was going to have him call me tomorrow.
That would be so cool if you found the right guy. It sure sounds like it may be.
Thank you,
Doug

I thought since its close, that this might be a Frank Jr......and that he might be able to help figure it out. I know my dad had a set of military tags that his uncle had made for him (dad was 8 or 9 ) when the uncle was in the service

Gypsy,
Sorry to say, that Frank Perkins didn't pan out as being the right one. He told me he enlisted in the 1950's and had his tags. :'(
I've found 10 "Frank Perkins" in NC, so I'm not giving up yet. There are also two "Perkins" (not Franks) listed in Morrisville, NC where I found the tag. I've tried to call them, but no answer due to the holiday. Perhaps Frank was a relative? Anyways, thank you for trying Girl. ;)
Your ugly sister,
Dougita

Congratulations on your first barber. 1906 o is a tough one in higher grades. I'd say it looks VF. That was a nice early Christmas gift! I found my first over six months ago early in June. It was an 1896 o. Considering that you're down south, there should be a lot more o mint coins around. I found my first seated coin about a week after the first barber. You have plenty of time and good weather. Upstate NY is covered in snow and LI is windy and cold right now.

Thanks SMS88.
I honestly wish we had snow down here too. It just doesn't seem like Christmas with 60 degree weather. :'(
I gew up in Northern Indiana and miss that white stuff this time of year.

What an excellent bunch of finds, MM! Love the Barber but the dog tags and Sousa harmonica piece are sweet too. Excellent photos, too. Keep digging....wish I could be!

Doug,
Im laughing at Gypsy's post. Sister. ;)
looking at the side of that ring it looked like some type of writeing on it. It may be Cherokee. Please let me know what you find out on it. )My grandmother was full blooded.)
btw WHAT color dress was you wearing??
Joe

Wow Doug,
Those are some really awsome finds you have dug up.
Gotta love the silver, especially at this time of the year.
Glad you had some fun and a very productive day.

whoa! that is one AWESOME hunt!!! The dime (gotta find me one of those) is in excellent condition! That ring is really cool too. If it fits, wear it :)

Congrats on all those neat finds and Merry Christmas!

Joe

Thanks everyone. This property has turned up a lot of history and nice finds. I'm hoping to get at least one more good hunt in before the end of the year.

Way to go on the Barber MM...and what a nice variety of digs. Looks like you have a great site to hunt.

Wow....Those are some great finds. That Barber is in sweet condition. I've yet to join the club myself. :'( I really dig the relics too. Hit that spot hard!

Cheers and HH,
Bman

Your going from strength to strength.

WELL DONE.

All you need now is a Cortes & your finds will go through the roof. You couldn't pay me to use another machine.

Good thing about upgrading is you can go over all the same areas again & pick-up the ones that slipped through the net.

Thanks Crusader.
I'll keep that in mind.
-MM-

It would be the best thing you ever did (don't tell the wife). Starve for a couple of weeks if you have to or buy second hand. My Dad's was second hand & his is going strong.

Great finds MM. You have one heck of a good site there. I was looking at your flat base 3 ring bullet on the M&M site(thanks to Ty for posting) and I think you have a .54 cal Merrill carbine bullet. The .56 cal Colt revolving rifle only has 2 rings. Congrats again on some nice recoveries.
