I had an awesome day today at the 1830's CW property. I finally was able to join the "Barber Club" with a 1906 "O" Barber dime. Yaba-daba-doo!!! I was hoping for an 1800's silver coin this year, but I'm VERY happy with this find. It only took me a year. :'( I also found two CW bullets, and a nice heavy mans ring with Indian design. All of these finds were made on the side yard that I have hit once before. The ring and one of the CW bullets I found right in the same area that I dug the CW Eagle belt plate a few weeks back. Must have been an active area? After today's hunt, I can see I need to pound that area a few more times, as I missed some decent finds.
I also found a military dog tag which was a first for me.
A great day indeed. I think the mojo between BDoo, Civilman, and I is working. ;D ;)
Here is the rundown of today's hunt:

*A 1906 "O" Barber dime. This is my oldest U.S. silver coin ever. According to my coin book, I think it would grade out at about an F12, since I can see all the letters of "LIBERTY" on the headband. The back has excellent shape detail still. My 2003 coin book shows an F12 as $40.

*A beautiful silver men's ring (heavy) with an Indian design on it. No markings inside. I cleaned it up and it came out beautiful. It fits me, so I may wear this one.
Any idea of it's age? I hope the same guy who lost his sword belt place lost this too, that way it would be CW era. ;)

*Military dog tag with "Frank Perkins 343405097 T42 44 O".
Any idea of it's age or how I could track this person or his relatives down so I could return it?

*Two CW 3-ringer bullets. The smaller one has a flat bottom. What type bullet would this be?

*Sunoco "Antique Car Coin Series" token with a 1918 Cadillac Landaulet on it.

*Round piece of lead with letters on it.

*A harmonica side piece with "Sousa's Band - Made in Germany" engraved on it.

*An 1800's lock front cover with an eagle and "W.W. & Co." on it.

*Asst'd other relics. Any idea what those two pointed pieces are? I've found one at the other farm property I hunt too.

So many questions, so little time. ::)
Thanks for looking and have a safe and happy holiday season.

Excellent stuff there sister....love it all!

Gypsy,
You are awesome Girl !!! I just called and spoke to the wife at the # above. She said her husband Frank was sleeping, but he was an inductee in the service. He is 71 years old now. She sounded very excited, and was going to have him call me tomorrow.
That would be so cool if you found the right guy. It sure sounds like it may be.
Thank you,
Doug

I thought since its close, that this might be a Frank Jr......and that he might be able to help figure it out. I know my dad had a set of military tags that his uncle had made for him (dad was 8 or 9 ) when the uncle was in the service

Doug congrats on a fine assortment of finds!

The dog tag is an oddball. The "T" numbers apparently indicate a tetanus innoculation in 1942, boosted in 1944. "O" would be blood type. Your 71 year old guy would have been 8 years old in 1944. The number is more likely a social security number than a military serial number. An issue dog tag of that period would indicate whether the bearer was an officer or enlisted, the service arm (Army, Navy, etc.) and probably religious affiliation. My guess is a custom civilian novelty item made for non-military personal use.

Thanks for that info OC.
I don't think it's a social security #, as it would be one digit shy. This thing is a mystery. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of it.
Thanks,
MM

You have a nice assortment of goodies. The pointed things are lightning rod cable clamps. They secured the grounding cable to the house or building. Have a happy holiday season and keep on diggin.

I'm glad you had such a fabulous hunt today. Here is a link for info on the Sousa piece. http://www.dws.org/sousa/articles/bio.htm
talk to you soon

Jeff

Thanks Jeff for the info. I wish you could have made it too. I know how it is around the holidays. Besides, you would have had a 6 hr roundtrip drive, compared to my 1/2 hr drive. ;) They'll still be stuff there whenever you decide to come this way.
And just think, if were YOU that found that Barber dime after I've been searching a year for one, I would have had to take up drinking. ;D

MM ,what an outstanding hunt! A little of everything! Yes I am jealous .... :D I only found one barber this year and it was a 1905 in about half of that condition. Very nice group of history. :)

Your going from strength to strength.

WELL DONE.

All you need now is a Cortes & your finds will go through the roof. You couldn't pay me to use another machine.

Good thing about upgrading is you can go over all the same areas again & pick-up the ones that slipped through the net.

Thanks Crusader.
I'll keep that in mind.

Doug congrats on a fine assortment of finds!

Thanks Gregg.
The Barber was a real treat to find. I've seen so many people digging them throughout the year they seemed common. I started doubting my machine on finding silver, but I knew darn well it found deep old buttons, IH's, and Mercs. I guess I just never had the chance to sweep my coil over a Barber until yesterday. It amazes me to think that coin is 101 years old.
I'll be slowing my speed down and hitting the same yard areas again for sure.
Take care and have a great holiday season.

You're right, that looks like the one. I see he is out of stock on that one. Maybe he would want to buy it? ;) Just kidding. I've never found one like it, so it's going in my collection.
Thanks Buddy.

Big time congrats to you my friend. The Mojo is definitely working.

Thanks Buddy. When I dug up those great finds yesterday I thought of you and that mojo ring you sent me. I think it's actually a "magic" ring. ;)

Thanks Big Guy. Your BDD posts are always a treat to read too. If we didn't have a bit of humor here, it would be aweful dry. Not everyone looks as good in a dress as me either. Come on, admit it. :o :P ;)
I'm glad I reached my Barber goal this year. My next goal will be to hit on some 1800's silver.
Have a Merry Christmas (is that politically correct to say still?) and make sure you fill Kyle's stocking with plenty of batteries. ;)

Thanks Birdman.
I found two very nice (detailed) silver coins this year. One was this Barber dime, and the other was a 1923 Merc dime out in the farm woods by my work. I would have been happy just finding any Barber, but this one was icing on the cake. ;D

Some very cool stuff there. Congrat's on the barber. I am in love with that ring and the eagle on the door piece is awsome as well. Great hunt.

Thanks GF.
I really need to find out more on this ring. I know it is old, but I'd love to find out how old and what these symbols mean. When I brought it home it was caked with an almost tar like substance and was a b-tch to clean up. Chemicals weren't doing it, so I used a very fine steel wool to polish it up. That worked great. I'm wondering if the tar like substance on it was oil. The railway runs right next to this property. It has been there from the CW times. The property owners said that a train derailed a long time ago and spilled oil on this side yard. It actually got into their well, and they had to dig a new one. The larger white well in the picture is now sealed off since the oil spill. You can see the arrow of where I found this ring. I hope I can get more info on it. Right now I'm wearing it. I've noticed my finger is a bit too "chubby" for it. Either that, or it shrunk overnight. ;D

I want to thank everyone for their wonderful replies to my post, and also wish you all a happy holiday. You're the best!!!
My wife is booting me off her computer now, so I'll check back in later.
I do wear the pants dress in the family though. :D
