Yesterday i went on a four hour drive to an old silver mining ghost town the whole hunts i was finding square nails and bottle caps UNTIL i got a 42 vdi on the x-terra 70 dug down about 8 inches thinking it was a can ( or NOT !!!) i turned the trusty garret pro pointer on,moved the dirt and saw a 1855 o seated half with arrows in excellent shape. My oldest silver,My oldest coin find,My first half!!!! :laughing9:

BANNER!!!!!!!!!!?????

any tips how i could clean this coin?

Let it soak a while in warm soapy water, then use an old tooth brush and lightly brush the dirt away. You won't hurt the coin, it's the real harsh methods that ruin dug silver coins... baking soda rub, tooth paste, electrolysis etc..
I wouldn't use the brush - it could leave minor marks - grading companies would recognize 'em. Just the soapy water.

It's a dug coin and the problems number many. I don't think the graders play a role in this one.

is it in good enough shape to get graded

No, spend your money on something fun. Just pop it in a 2x2, take a stab at the grade, and be happy!

Post it on the coin forum for some opinions, then just average them. (probably fairly accurate, and free!)

My suggestion not to grade has more to do with the book value than it being a nice coin. It's a very good detecting find.

Hey Skater and all the respondants so far - what are the crossed stick looking things in the
pic of the obverse -- between lady liberty's elbow and knee - ??? could this be a major
die break ? Argentium.

Re: FIND OF A LIFETIME!!!! BANNER!!!!!

Great Find! CONGRATS! You got my vote for BANNER!!

The thing about cleaning is to do the absolute minimum. Some people say NONE ... some say soapy water and light brush.

My opinion is that washing off any dirt is OK as long as you don't produce any evidence of it on the metal or patina of the coin. I've never found anything as old (or valuable) so this is all theory.

Um... yeah. Good eye Argentium. I didn't see that the first time. That should definitely not be there. Could be a die break I suppose. Anyway we could get a clear close up on that spot skater?

Re: FIND OF A LIFETIME!!!! BANNER!!!!!

Don't clean it... Its just fine the way it is cleaning it will make it worse. If you do get it graded you could get VF details but it will be Environmentally damaged. Still that's a $200.00 coin with VF details so I'd think about getting it graded. Even if it grades as G-4 that's a $45 dollar coin so you can at least still profit from the coin if you get it graded. So I think its worth a grade but.... Do not clean it !!

Great find !! :notworthy: :headbang:

Keep @ it and HH!! ;D :D
