First Large Cent

ks coyote · Nov 20, 2014

Hunted a field with friends and found my first Large cent. It was pretty toasty from the fertilizer but coaxed a date with a SOS pad. Not in the best shape
but I'll take it. :hello2:

It's always so exciting to see a large cent in the hole! Congrats! It may be toasty, but at least there is a legible date. So many come out of the ground pretty much blank. Well done!!

Still a good find..

Very nice find. Congrats on finding your first one.

That's not only your first large cent but the 1856 was the last large cent! After 1856 the new "Flying Eagle cent" came out (1857), and then the Indian Head came out a couple years after that (1859).

Actually 1857 was the last year for the large cents. 1793-1857 with the exception of 1815 when there was a shortage of copper.

Nice job.. Hope you find a lot more.

I cringed when I read you cleaned it with an SOS pad.
Hopefully, on your next IH find, you'll use something a little less abrasive.

I started with a olive oil soak but too far gone for that. Was just hoping to get a date and happy with that.

I have to say your large cents appears to be in much better condition then many I have seen posted on here. Many look like blank discs to me but I can plainly see a lot of detail on yours. Very nice.
