So while I liked the scoopers that everyone keeps talking about... Im not feeling the pricetag. So I have designed my own and will have it made at my friends metal shop. Thought I would post up some pics... now remember it is still in the design phase... but I would appreciate any comments or improvements you can think of.

The handle would be inside the rounded box area on the top and will be able to me mounted in multiple angles, not fixed. Thought this would give better adjust-ability as not everyone is the same. Obiviously there would be holes from 1/4" to 1/2" added.

so far looks pretty good man i like how u r gonna have the multiple angles on the handle um my question would be how long is it like the lip on the bottom and i guess the only other thing id ask is what type of metal r u making it out of curious on how heavy it may b either way bad a?s when people c what they want and just make it just like the good ole days

So I havent decided on all the sizes yet, and everything is scalable. I was thinking about doing a 5-6" wide opening, about 7-8" long and 4-5" tall. But as this would be my first one I thought I would put it out there and see what the community thinks before I actually start on it. As far as which metal I can use anything but because of the weight I would most likely use aluminum. I could also use stainless steel but I think it might be just a bit too heavy. As for the handle I found a great wooden handle from home depot in the curtain rod section... its 4' long and about 1.25" wide. Very light and strong. As far as cost it would really depend on if I were to use SS or Alum. Either way it wouldn't be much... as I said it is a friend of mine's metal shop so he doesn't charge me for labor.

So far sounds like its gonna work out great have u mayb considered a fiberglass handle on it it just poped in my head. Lite, hollow, might float making it even lighter in the water ? When it comes down to it I honestly havent a clue I havent done any water hunting so just goin by What uv done so far

I had not thought about a fiber handle but I will definitely look into it now. Thanks for the great thought. I wonder how it would hold up with the bolts going though it at the base... guess I will be doing a little more research tonight.

Haha well I thought of that cuz most todays garden shovels r fiber & said to b strong & light strong i thought ok ya cuz half of all sports cars r fiberglass they hold up to salt from roads in the winter metals kinda dont like salt to much same as boats but remember ive never hunted water so just throwing it out there let me know im curious as hell now

I have made a sandscoop and used a fiberglass handle and two bolts ,works great it was my first scoop . I used a post hole digger and the bolts from it also . And yes the handle floats it would stand up in the water another plus.

I think an 8" width at the front of the scoop is better than 6" and 5" is just too small. Pinpointing in the water can be a pain and width helps in recovery accuracy and speed. Avoid the curtain rod idea for a handle, they aren't made of good wood since they don't carry much of a load. An adjustable handle angle is a nice idea but I doubt it's really practical since sand is very unforgiving and I'd worry about wear at any point of movement. To use the fiberglass post hole digger handle which I got online I sealed the insides at the bottom with a 1" hardwood dowel about 6" long and used West System slow cure epoxy. That made it very strong against crushing by a through bolt and the good handles are already double-thick at the bottom from the factory. I really like to see people make and design their own tools and gear (I fish with rods and lures of my own making) but sometimes it isn't practical to re-invent the wheel if you know what I mean. By the time you get your design done, your friend makes it, you will probably have more hours in it than the cost of a Stavr or T-Rex. But please post it when done, a good adjustable angle system could revolutionize the scoop industry.

The scoop I made was 7 inches wide, 3.5 inches tall and the length to the cutting edge is 11 inches, the sides are 10 inches.

If you fill the scoop all the way up with sand it holds quite a bit. If its wet sand it becomes pretty heavy. Especially after say 3 or 4 hours of hunting.

I wouldn't recommend going much larger. That's my 2 cents.

Good luck with your design!
