Hi all,
Well, I went out today looking for older areas on my map..I found one and searched it for awhile, but had absolutely no luck. I didn't know where else to go, so I went back to a grade school I had been to many times before. The only thing I found that was a little out of the ordinary was a Bicentennial quarter
Since the grade school is right behind my old high school, I decided to go there and try my luck in and around the football field, which is near some tennis courts and a baseball diamond. Last year I had barely begun looking near the tennis courts and was finding clad all over, but I ran out of time and hadn't been back since.
The football field area was flat, the grass was thin and the soil was soft and dark as can be, and the weather here was sunny and the high reached 60 degrees. Except for a few muddy areas from where last week's snow saturated the ground, the conditions for MDing was as good as it gets.
After being there less than an hour, I found my first silver coin, a Washington quarter:
I just couldn't believe my luck because my high school was built in 1975.
After digging up nothing else but clad (but still having a great time) I came across this ring:
By this time it was way past noon (closer to 1:00) and I was tired so I decided to head back home..as I was heading back I rubbed the ring to get some dirt off and noticed the gold color was kind of brown in the back, so it looks like it's maybe gold plated
It has 5 stones, but I was still glad to have found it. Last night I was thinking how long it had been since I found a ring, so I decided to play around with my detector last night by putting my own ring on the ground to see what the reading would be, so I used it to my advantage. My unit reads it as either a ring or bottle cap. However, every time I dug for either one, I would come up with pieces of old aluminum cans each time.
I was hitting aluminum cans everywhere but dug every signal regardless. Eventually the small clump I dug out was too small to hide a big piece of aluminum, so I said to myself, "A ring would be nice.." And there it was!
THEN.....
I went home, ran a few errands and felt I just had to go back to make the most of this gorgeous day (it's gonna turn cold this weekend), so I took my 10-year-old son with me. Here's a shot of him in the field we searched today:
He used my Prizm and I used his unit (my old White's Coinmaster II). In less than an hour I found ANOTHER ring! This time it was sterling silver with 4 stones in 7 different lines (28 stones)! After cleaning, we noticed one stone was missing, but hey, I'll take it anyway!
In the hole:
Before cleaning:
And after cleaning:
I also found this gorgeous bronze religious medal:
So all the above, a token and $7.45 in clad really made me happy after about 5 1/2 hours of work!
