Thursday I got to hunt a friends(grandmothers) old farm, and we didnt find much, except a bunch of metal trash(axe head, shovel head, fencing etc) then He found a wheatie, I walked over and said, there must be silver around, and sure enough, I started swinging, and found that 54 rosie... pretty beat up but its still silver! :) Then that was about it for our finds that day, I did manage to find a wheat after he left...

Today I wanted to get up early and detect some local schools, But I slept in, and wasted most of my time, but had an hour and half until I had to be at work, so I headed to a school for a quick 1 hour hunt... I knew there used to be soccer fields, so that was my focus area, looking for jewelery/coins left behind...

Figured I would swing until I got to my destination, and first hit I got too, was this beautiful Barber!! The metal is in great shape, not very worn at all, except it has some tarninshing or something... should I try and clean it up, or let it be?

Man that is so sweet! My 5th piece of silver since I got detecting, only a month ago... got 2 pieces of jewelery, a war nickel, that rosie, and the barber...

Thx treasurenet! :)

Congrats on the Barber !

Nice find! I'd say you're looking at a $40/$50 piece if sold on ebay - it's in far better condition than "melt/scrap value" - from what I can tell in the pics it looks to be in the VF range for condition. I'd take that all day/everyday!

Judging from your photos, your coin is (was) in the Fine to Very Fine range ... $25 to $40. But you did clean it so that lessens it's value of course. Doesn't really matter I guess as long as you are pleased with it's appearance. As a rule .. if you are thinking of selling key-date or semi key-date silver coins and getting the most $$ .. cleaning is not an option. Very nice find anyways. Congrats ! PM me with a price that you think it is worth, I would be interested in buying it.

why is the dirty coin a 1903 and the clean coin a 1902 ?

First, the type of quarter is irrelevant. If you're after silver bullion, US silver coins are 90% silver - just save it, save the dime, stick them in a jar and when you fill the jar, put it in the safe and start a new one. It really doesn't matter whether it's a Barber, SLQ, or Washington; the silver content is the same - and it also won't matter if you clean it, either, but I do recommend researching the date to make sure it's not a key date before you do clean it, as you'll get far more for an uncleaned key date. I have a 1921 Morgan that I used tarnish remover on a number of years ago, and guess what? If I showed it to you, you'd never know it'd been cleaned. Your quarter is in great enough condition that I'd say the cleaning didn't hurt it at all.

Second - GO BACK TO THAT SAME PARK!!! You've already had a nice hit there; do you think that's all there is to find? I would hit that park over and over; who knows what else you'll find! People tend to carry, spend, and drop coins that are on average up to about 40 years old (except zinc pennies, which don't last two decades in the dirt). Stick your hand in your pocket and check the dates on your change; 1967 was 46 years ago. 1976 was 37 years ago. 1984 was 28 years ago. And so on. So, given that, your Barber quarter could have been dropped anywhere from 1903 to the 1940s (although, given its condition, I'd say closer to 1903 than anything). And guess what? They were still minting silver coins in the 1940s. So keep hitting that park.

Third: Axe heads are NOT TRASH!!!

nice finds, and i hear ya my first coin i found was a barber quarter in pa. i was 6 or 7..i was addicted to treasure from that time forward...hh!!!

You know, I see that too, But it is an illusion apparently... To me looking at that pic, I see what you mean and can see the "2" clearly, but I can also see the 3, maybe its the way my lighting hit the coin for that pic... I didnt clean the 3 into a 2, haha that was funny though Diggin :)

It is the same coin, and Ill get a better pic later, as im off to pick up some boxes of halves

It's not, the pic is blurry is all... I can see that the cleaned coin is still a 1903 lol

Cti- Thanks for the comment!

I had read about the cleaning of old coins like this, but after only being offered spot value for it, I decided I didnt like the uglyness, and wanted it clean :) I would love to find some SLQs though, The design on them are so unique...

Well its not exactly a park, Its a school that was built within the last 25 years on an old field, So it has been bulldozed over, atleast in some areas. But I met someone else who has detected there, and also said he found a 1908(I think thats what he said) barber quarter.

Lastly, How do you go about telling what an axe head is worth? I think we even left it out in the weather...We figured it was atleast worth a few bucks to scrap, but neither of us wanted to lug it around

Edit: also, about the field, I think I will be back for sure, I have a new machine now, the AT Pro, compared to the ace250 I was using when I found the barber, So it should hit deeper, for hopefully more silver :)

Axe heads have more historical value than intrinsic value. You could learn a bit about preservation if you spent the time to clean it, and then you could donate it to the local history society. Post a pic of it, I'd like to see it :) If you don't mind, PM me with the location info where you found it, and I'll do some research on it. I don't think you live near me, and I wouldn't steal your spot anyway, I have plenty of my own. GL with your new AT Pro, I just got one myself and can't wait to try it out!

nice find......HH

Yeah I think im going to sell it, I like the silver content, but it has a higher numismatic value I believe, So I would sell it, and buy pure silver with the funds, or save up for the AT Pro

Thx for the kind words everybody, Im off to go to another park here soon

Too funny. I was just thinking the same thing. Selling finds to buy silver or the AT pro. My real issue has been time. I am finding more and more every time I search, but the most time I have had so far is an hour and a half. Holidays and work has really sucked up the hours. The first day I had off without other commitments and it rained and then snowed here. It snows here about once a year! I need a day or two to get out and hunt!

Very nice, and a little more Ag for the pile:thumbsup:

Nicely done!

All the best,
