this one has me going...I found it at a village site where I had found other obvious artifacts made from the same stone (pestles, mauls, and the like)...so it has that going for it. Notice the beveled sides...both sides.... Obviously broken, very smooth and a rounded tip. Got any ideas? The only similar item I have come across are "slave killers" but this is not fine enough for that...too rough.

The ridge is frequently seen on nice celts in this part of the country. Can't say I have seen a Mano with that ridge. I'd like to see one if any one has a pic.

I always thought Manos were either square or round and Pestles were long like a roller pin. Until I came to this site.

Seeing it is broken and the other half is gone we will probably never know for sure. The missing end might of had a bit on it.

Oh, you are talking about the Celt. Faceted, my bad. I do have one that is beat to crap. I hope pics will allow the ridge to be seen. It got plowed over multiple times.

True. We could probably argue it back and fourth for quite a while. Here is a faceted celt.
The difference that I see between the Celt and the pestle is .... "in most cases"... the length as compared to the width between the two is usually different. Where the pestle is comparatively skinny in relation to its length... the Celt is normally wider and a bit more robust. This being very visible... at least to me... on the poll end like the broken one above. So I guess if I had to bet... I would go with pestle.

I know you must know your artifacts in North Carolina better than me.. but I have to say I don't see a Celt when I look at that. I've seen alot from North Carolina.. They made them pretty well.
Look at the axe heads you've found.

It's a Celt that was plowed over Lord only knows how many times. We have all said this, pictures just don't show all of the detail. Believe me, had I gotten to it ten years ago, it would be the largest Celt I've ever seen. In hand, you would see it. I on the other hand see how you wouldn't be able to see it on the screen. One side is totally busted the other side still shows how it was ground and pecked. It's just looking through all of the plow scars, my lack of photography skill, and bad lighting that makes it impossible to see in the pics. I can't even really see the reason I have held on to this one in the pics. It's the same size as my old raised ridge axe a tad over 8 inches long. Took a man to swing those I'm sure. Lol! I'll work on taking pics of it at a distance tomorrow. I think a step back may dampen the plow scars on the good side. If so, I'll send you a pic of it.
