Waiting patiently! Nice dig.

Good morning, just finding this thread and waiting patiently too.Another way to get a date and more details on a coin is to take a picture with a magnifying glass over the object. This works even with a phone shot.It helps to also try different colors of paper behind the coin to bring out more detail.

Let's see the date. If I see a 6 I will jump for joy for you... and then smash my head in my desk out of jealousy. Get to that canon camera!

AND PLEASE DON'T CLEAN THIS COIN WHATSOEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome awesome find there man either way!! What's the chance there's another flying eagle at that same site? Really freakin amazing! This is why I joined this site, to share and enjoy not only my own finds but everyone else's finds as well!
This is the kind of stuff that's about to make me call in sick for work and get out there detecting all day lol!! Way to go man once again awesome find congrats!!! Keep us all posted!!

Outrageous , if this is 1856 - congratulations on a very Banner worthy find !!!

Wow! Super find! Can't wait to see a better pic (you will need a good shot in order to make banner). I found an 1857 & was thrilled. Congrats!

Try using a scanner too and scan at 800 dpi. It's too bad most FE cents do not come out of the ground well (my '57 included). I don't think the estimates of $5K posted earlier are accurate for this coin--I don't believe this coin will grade due to the environmental damage, though if it is a '56 it would prossibly bring up to a couple hundred bucks or so. Regardless of the date any FE is a great find....congrats on it AND the half dime--sounds like you got yourself a good spot there! Personally I wouldn't sell it--put it in a nice plastic case after sealing it and just add this rare coin to your collection.

As Grant mentioned, don't attempt to clean the coin any more.

hope It's the real deal .

:dontknow: these hard to tell because of condition , are what I like to call , a rare coin mirage , :BangHead: wishful thinking has ruined the BIG FIND parade a few times

NICE!!!!waitin to hear more on this

Well that would be a first. Should I hold my breath?

I wouldn't suggest doing that. These potential very rare dates always happen to be on poor condition coins and in the end they end up not what the finder hoped for, or inconclusive. But it's still possible so I'll wait and see, just won't be holding my breath. :)

Went back to the STILL PRODUCING HILL SITE Today and found an 1856 flying eagle cent

Hope you have the 1856 waiting to see pic

A Flying Eagle is next on my collection list. I do hope you have found a true 1856!

If you have then I invite you to go to Las Vegas with me as I am sure with your luck we could strike it rich!

Let me just start out by saying 100% I wish you the best and I truly hope this turns out to be the key date that you think it is.

That being said... I think it would benefit you to start out by classifying a find like this as "inconclusive". Then you can track down the appropriate resources to help make a final determination. I don't see a single aspect of your post to indicate that this is what you think it is. The fact that many knowledgeable THers have chimed in without positive verification also leads me to believe this.

I am also a little concerned about some of the responses from others. Just because the OP is calling this an 1856, doesn't make it a reality. Let's just wait for a little more conclusive evidence before starting the celebration.

Again, I truly hope I am proven wrong. Let's see that 1856!!!

Here's what typically happens... part of the number is blocked and looks like another. Below was a perfect 8, just with part I covered in white to mimic what can happen with wear or corrosion on a coin. There should be slight differences in a blocked 8 vs a true 1856.
