Make no mistake everyone here is cheering for him. But if it doesn't work out that's just how it goes, and why the damn things are so rare. I don't think it's a real shocker when someone *doesn't* find a rare coin. (It's rather normal)

Yep. I know. That's why I said what I said. It's just the nagging that gets old and may discourage someone from posting a retraction. That's all I meant.

HH!

Alright guys just got back from the coin shop, I'm about to post the update and a few pictures!!! Here we go

I'm blue in the face waiting! Need...air...soon...:)

Anxious to see them and sincerely hope to see a 6!!!

I hope your photos show the letters AM in AMERICA, that alone can eliminate it from being an 1856 if there is space between the two letters. It would than be a 1858. Most coin dealers/collectors are not too great at IDing ground found coppers in bad shape, so I hope your dealer did not make an intelligent guess on the date.

wake me when ya get the update man

I was going to wait for the pics to compare them, but it's good to hear there's another difference besides the date.

It really is amazing how many people come back to the forum with the wrong info. from their local dealer.

Having a space between the A M in AMERICA does eliminate 1856 and 1857 years, but a touching AM does not guarantee it is an 1856, since 1858 also had some with AM touching each other, but like I said, IF there is a noticeable space between the feet of the letters A M than it is an 1858. Also the 5 on the 1856 is different from the 5 on all 1858's.
The style of the 5 in the date was different in 1856 and 1858 as well, another key diagnostic. In 1856, the 5 had a long top bar that tapered to a sharp point, while in 1858 the top bar was shorter and had a rounded tip.
I believe this link on coinfacts explains all of that.

...From what I've seen here, they can be almost vicious in their peer pressure....just take your good ole time and post the proof whenever you feel like...

I enjoy some of your posts, but the above statements to me are bit absurd...like telling this guy that people can be viscious around here. That's nonsense--the moderators don't allow it and there are MANY very knowledgeable folks here that always try to help and get at the truth. The only time people start to get impatient is when folks post what seems like "unbelievable finds" and then refuse to back them up with pictures or any proof whatsoever--it speaks to the credibility of the forum--and many don't want to see it dragged down. E.g., I still don't think the guy who found the jar full of old $2 bills has posted a pic yet. This poster couldn't post fast enough last night, was supposed to get a camera "first thing in the morning" then we hear NOTHING although he's trying to sell his eTrac on another forum and buy a new sheath for his digger during the day. A couple hours ago he was supposed to post new pics of the coin and an analysis of it from a "coin dealer." Still nothing posted though the post was supposed to be imminent. But by all means let the OP take his "good ole time"...if he can't post something this week, then next week is just as good a week as any. :tongue3:

i guess he's just gonna leave us all hanging im done watching this forum

I'm sorry, wvwildman, that wasn't supposed to be your wake up call. That was my alarm clock reminding me that the soup's done. LOL ;)

POST THE PICTURES NOW!! EVERYBODY DOES IT!!

I'd love to see it, even if it's not a '56. I think he's having a little fun with you guys for having fun with him! :laughing7:
I have a flying eagle, but bought it at an estate sale. It's pretty worn, but I got it cheap enough. It's not a '56!

Have to give Mr. Larry credit for this on the $2 bill thread. One of my favorites.

Don't try to clean it too much. I have a couple of flying eagles but neither are 56s. Great find.

I understand he's hard at work as we speak with a Dremel tool turning it into a Hobo Penny! Turned out it was only an 1855 and not an 1856!

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :protest:
