The folks on this forum are hilarious! If you weren't used to it, you could be offended, but I think it's good stuff!
Hope our OP is thick skinned! :laughing9:

No matter what this is a interesting thread and has told me able the other way to pre-verify it ( not conclusive ) with the AM in America . I found what I believed to be 1856 in Northern Illinois wayback when . For many days I looked at it because it too was in poor shape . It wasn't until years later that I acquired a microscope type of magnifier that shows it's a 1858 but now I'm going to look again ( wishful thinking ) . When these coins deteriorate the 8 can be mistaken for a 6 .
But it looks like we'll never see the pictures ... but just like the rest of us " show us the pictures ". IMHO , Woodstock

I enjoy some of your posts, but the above statements to me are bit absurd...like telling this guy that people can be viscious around here. That's nonsense--the moderators don't allow it and there are MANY very knowledgeable folks here that always try to help and get at the truth. The only time people start to get impatient is when folks post what seems like "unbelievable finds" and then refuse to back them up with pictures or any proof whatsoever--it speaks to the credibility of the forum--and many don't want to see it dragged down. E.g., I still don't think the guy who found the jar full of old $2 bills has posted a pic yet. This poster couldn't post fast enough last night, was supposed to get a camera "first thing in the morning" then we hear NOTHING although he's trying to sell his eTrac on another forum and buy a new sheath for his digger during the day. A couple hours ago he was supposed to post new pics of the coin and an analysis of it from a "coin dealer." Still nothing posted though the post was supposed to be imminent. But by all means let the OP take his "good ole time"...if he can't post something this week, then next week is just as good a week as any. :tongue3:

First of all Erik in New Jersey maybe before u start running your mouth about people posting unbelievable finds you and refusing to back them up you should think before you write because honestly it makes you look like a dumb ass! I went to my moms this morning my transmission went out I took her car to three coin dealers to try to find out a little more of what I was dealing with so I could answer YOUR QUESTIONS!! On the way home I stopped and bought a new truck would you like a picture of that too!! Anyhow I will be posting some better pictures of this coin in one sec I just walked thru the door!

Well in mathematical terms the spacing between the "AM" is a neccessary, but not sufficient condition for an 1856 FE cent--in other words if you see a spaced "AM" on your coin, it guarantees that it is NOT an 1856 cent, but the a non-spaced "AM" does not guarantee that it IS an 1856 cent. If the date on your coin is difficult to read, this is an excellent indicator to help determine what coin you have. Kudos to Don for the post. Can you post a close-up of your coin so we can at least see that one??

So guys again sorry it took so long but I have been to three dealers and all three said it looks as if its a 58 with the top of the 8 worn due to an AM American there's a space or something! So I apologize for jumping the gun but I swore it's a 56 and it is a 56 but the 6 is a worn 8! And digger had me pumped last night so I just had to go get it checked out!! I read all your post though good forum I must say

LOL so it's my fault thanks guy! J/K hey I was pumped for you. crazy things have happened before so finding a 56 could happen some day. Hey you still found a coin that was only in circulation for 2 years! And that is a great find and now it has a good story to go with it.

Dig until your arm falls off

Yeah but I'm kinda hurt about it!! Haha

That's why I went and got it checked out because I couldn't get the crap date to show even with the good camera, and I was tired of hearing everyone's mouth hahaha

Thanks for the pics and update its still a nice coin that most of us don't have.

Sent from my iPhone using TreasureNet

Hope you got the 327 in that bad boy...those motors are tougher then nails

Yeah but I'm kinda hurt about it!! Haha

It happens to all if us in some way shape or form. I found a gold coin once and started going crazy and jumping up and down showing it to people... Well it was just a Mexican coin not worth a buck. I felt like a moron

Actually I didn't post anything yesterday and my posts in the AM didn't have any questions--just some advice to not clean the coin. Setting that aside, your second pic seems to show very clearly at least to me that it's an "8," but sometimes pics on the computer show details that are hard or impossible to see with the naked eye. You might want to invest in a 10X jeweler's loupe if you don't have one--my favorite is a Rubin & Son Triplet 10X 20.5mm--this one is a bit pricey, but it's professional quality, there are much cheaper ones. Anyway, I think everyone here was hoping it was an 1856. An 1858 is still a great find as I said in my original post--not many here have found FE cents AND you found a silver half dime to boot! Congrats on the new truck too! :icon_thumright:
