I won't lie Eric after everything I've been thru today that one post really got under my skin but I like your post on the forum you always have good advice but today I was not ignoring anyone I was simy trying to get my facts straight! As I said before I thought the da'm thing was an Indian until I got home and I was so excited I posted what I seem I didn't even know the 56 was a key date I was just saying holy crap look what I found!! It wasn't until digger explained the 56 when I was really like oh crap!! But i apologize for jumping on you I know u were just raggin with the rest of the bunch

Yes, we were just messing around waiting to hear something--it certainly wasn't personal...besides you know us Yankees from NJ are trouble makers! :laughing7: I also dug a '58 FE in Cape Cod a few years ago and I thought it was a fatty Indian till I got home and saw the date and thought, gee that's an odd date for an Indian cent...I was thrilled that I'd found a FE cent! They are VERY hard to find--any of the three dates. I work on a trading floor and we're a bit tough on each other for entertainment, but we all like one another, so take my comments with a grain or salt. You have a great site and the AT Pro is a great machine and I'm sure you'll make a lot more excellent finds there! You second photo is very clear on my laptop...I can see an 8 pretty well, but the other pics don't show it. Get yourself a bottle of Verdi-Care and apply some to the coin...it will preserve it and bring out the details. If you PM me your address I will tell you where to get the Veri-Care and mail you a nice Whitman plastic 2x2 to put that coin in to display it. How's that?

Works for me brother but don't worry about the 2x2 I already got her in one! But yeah I need to know about the Verdi-care what is it exactly

Hey Petrie, You know I'm just 1.5 hours up 71, if you need any help working that site. Just trying to help! :)

Here's their blurb on the product. I have been using it and like it quite a bit.

At last a modern alternative to using oil and harsh solvents on coins! Coin conservationists have used oil on coins for hundreds of years. Coin conservationists have used solvents for decades. However, oils contain trace amounts of impurities that can actually act to damage a coin's surface over time and solvents may harm or strip the patina. Also, oils are difficult to remove, slowly degrade, allow moisture to get to the surface and may have negative health effects. Oils are ‘old school’ and have primarily been used because there was no other choice. It’s time to move into the 21st century with a modern-day, alternative that utilizes the latest advances in chemical technology and coin conservation science.
VERDI-CARE™ is designed to work on all metal coin surfaces: gold, silver, copper, brass, etc. No more trial and error, no more guesswork, no more worries. VERDI-CARE™ is safe, gentle and effective as a surface debris remover. VERDI-CARE™ allows collectors to conserve their coins and not strip them clean of luster and original patina. There is a big difference between conservation and cleaning. With VERDI-CARE™ you can be sure not to cross that line due to its safe and gentle nature. Your coins will be conserved, not cleaned. Problems like light surface residue, verdigris and corrosion can now be addressed without resorting to expensive, third-party conservation services.
  • No more trying several different chemicals hoping that one of them will fix the problem!
  • No more long months of oil or chemical soaking!
  • No more crying over a ruined coin!
For Protection VERDI-CARE™ utilizes a 2-stage system surface. Closest to the surface, the ReAcT2™ ingredient forms a semi-permanent bond with metal. This layer provides heavy-duty, advanced corrosion protection and is only molecules thick. It is completely invisible and will last virtually forever. The second (upper) layer is an advanced, water-soluble, surface-conditioning, polymeric layer that will repel atmospheric contaminants, enhance luster and improve, not strip, the patina.

I don't know that I'd use any product on that coin if it was an 1856. To be honest, I can't tell from the photos. If the photos were taken through a magnifying lens, then it would show more clearly.

So for me, the jury is still out on the date.

Well Petrie502,

You had one dickens of a time with this one, quite exciting! I had a 56 once, a 4 door 3 seater and it was great! I hate to say it but your new red truck trumps my green 56 Chevy. Hang in there with the detecting, you will get another good find that everyone will go wild about again!......................63bkpkr

Zoomed in some. That last digit almost looks like a 7 to me

Hey man don't fret about it ! I posted that I did the same exact thing until I magnified it ... Woodstock
So guys again sorry it took so long but I have been to three dealers and all three said it looks as if its a 58 with the top of the 8 worn due to an AM American there's a space or something! So I apologize for jumping the gun but I swore it's a 56 and it is a 56 but the 6 is a worn 8! And digger had me pumped last night so I just had to go get it checked out!! I read all your post though good forum I must say

That means there is still an 1856 out there for one of us to find! Me first...

Hey, if my bad luck made for an interesting thread, and a new truck, I'd like to not find an 1856 every day.

The Verdi-Care sounds like it does the same thing as bees wax8-)

It is a fantastic product. It will deliver results similar to that of acetone, only better and safer.

If anyone thinks it will help the coin in question, they are sadly mistaken.

I have purified bees wax too. Not sure how they compare at a micro level, but I use them to try to achieve the same end result. Sealing the coin to retain moisture and to accentuate the details. Verdi-Care is certainly much easier to apply.

With this coin it may help to make the date a bit more visible--though it's not guaranteed. On the new close-ups I have to say it does look like a 7. The 8 is saw last night was the result of some of the corrosion making it look like an 8 on my laptop. My vote now goes to 1857!

How did he zoom in on my coin like that with the picture I took

I also believe it's a 57!! Very nice thread though guys and I made a new buddy in New Jersey after calling him an ass! Again I apologize eric

As an existing buddy of his, you may be prone to call him an ass again :-p

Truth be told... Erik's a great guy and very generous.

LOL, if one of your buddies can't call you an ass then who can?!?! ;) Thanks Grant. Petrie502 is a good guy and making some great finds there in KY! Wish I was closer. Any ID on the cannonball yet? I'm working on getting those supplies out to you this week--was sort of a hectic weekend :)

This penny sure produced a lot of talk.
