Found a 1916 D Mercury Dime

I'm in shock! Found today with my Fisher CZ-3D in an old football field. Sorry for the pic quality. I have not cleaned it, this is how it came out of the ground.

I agree with not cleaning it, but do think it is important that you Blast the dirt off the coin with hard running water.  This will carry the dirt away without scratching the coin--if you use water only without any rubbing or brushing of any kind.

The dirt can and will scratch the coin if you put it in a 2x2 holder dirty.  And any time you handle it with that dirt on there, you also run the risk. 

Bravo on not field cleaning the coin! 

I don't think you have to worry yet about any clinging dirt between the letters, etc., but you should make sure there isn't any dirt on the high points of the coin, IMO.

valuable as your find WTG !! on the 16D there might even be another one

Please take this mans advise. DON'T clean with anything. Send it in and have it cleaned and graded by a pro. You have a super nice coin that is worth BIG bucks and I would not take the chance of reducing the value by cleaning. NICE DIG.

I got this tip from Don SJ to clean coppers so I assumed it should be alright for any other coin as long as you lightly rub the coin...

I wouldn't use it for silver coins. For copper coins it is just fine.

Yes, It's in the thousands of dollars. I wouldn't handle it much and I would also get it graded.
