Found this about 6" deep in the side yard of a house in our subdivision (while searching for a lost gold earring).
It's small for a splitting wedge, in my experience, but maybe it was used for smaller "stove wood" or plank shaving?
It's 4.5" long and just barely over an inch wide. It has a slight groove from about halfway down to just under the head.
Any other ideas?

It could be a wedge used for an old wood plane that was hammered on by a rough carpenter.

Looks like a wood chisel that has been monsterized. Possibly a tang type, and the tang has been pounded to nothing.

Here's a thread with some spike ideas. 4" seems somewhat small for a wedge.

Did you find the earring?

Yeah I searched the forum here before posting but didn't find any spikes or wedges this small. I'm thinking if it was a firewood splitter they used it ALOT since the tang is so thin (as lucas noted), but it could have been used in stonework (as ss suggested) or woodworking (as bigC suggested) when they were building some of these houses back in the late 80's?!

And no, I didn't find the earring. Got a late start and I didn't have enough daylight to check the area thoroughly. Couldn't look for it yesterday, had too many errands to do. Gonna go back and try again when it quits raining.

Beat the cr@p out of one of these (missing its handle) with a hammer for a dozen jobs and it will look like what you have.

Which is a LOT better than a Viking "wedgie"!!!! ;D

The Vikings probably used it to split decorative timbers for their longboats.................
