Well, I went back to the area where I found that IH last week that cleaned up so well. No many targets left (Brendan really worked this area hard). Hit a rather odd sounding target and thought for sure it was a small piece of foil. To my surprise, out popped this:

I could only tell it was an IH by the back. The front, well... not in great shape

This is how it cleaned up. Looks like an 1875

Oh, here's the other part of the story. While I was MD'ing, something caught my eye. In the distance was this strange lookin' dog walking toward me. Didn't take long to figure out what it was :)

THATS NO DOG thats a red fox, be sure to keep your eye on him they are sly little creatures. And when you turn your back he'll take everything you found and rebury it lol.

Joe,
Great looking old IH you fox you. :D
Neat pictures.
Thanks,
MM

You sly fox.. Nice find.

Hello Joe!
Great coin; it cleaned up pretty good too! A little olive oil will make it shine.

That fox thinks the noise from your detector is a rabbit in distress! My SE drives the crows crazy!
When they fly nearby, I turn the volume up and drop a coin beneath the coil! :)

Red fox the silver ones are the ones you gotta watch out for :D :D :icon_jokercolor:

Hey Joe,

Indian Heads always fool me too - they're always weird signals and never come up as "penny." WTG!

I've never had this happen before... (and this is only my 4th IH...)

In an area like this one (or any wooded area with very few targets and no trash), any signal that's remotely good you dig. This (on the Exp II) sounded exactly like a small piece of aluminum foil (God knows I've dug enough of it at the beach). I had trouble finding it with the pinpointer. I couldn't believe it was a penny. Live and learn. I'll dig all of those in that situation. :)

thanks.

Nice find!!! Hey that 1st picture of the fox walking toward you,''Is it me just seeing things or is their not another creature in the back ground? .. :icon_cyclops_ani:
I called dear up before with my MDer,No lie the penny sound on mine sounds like a grunt call :dontknow:

often animals are curious about whats making that odd sound in their woods -- foxes often listen for high picthed and odd noises of small injuried criitters -- its their dinner bell to them ---we humans aren't the only ones with a curious nature ---so according to dora say "swiper no swiping" three times in a row --- then he will say "aw man" and go away--- Ivan

Word of caution.. not sure where you are.. but here in Virginia... a Fox out in the day time.. that let's itself been seen is a bad thing... we have had too many rabid ones!! When I was younger.. a "few" years ago(1982).. I shot 2 foxes and over 12 raccoons that all tested positive as rabid in one summer on my parent 10 acres... it go to the point where Animal Control would just tell me not to handle them... wrapped them in a garbage bag and bury them when I called!!! How is that for public service!! We have had one, last year.. that was in my yard.. weaving back and forth.. acting strange... he got away before I could get a rifle and track him... but be careful..

an NO.. to the animal lovers out there.. I ot go around just shooting them.. but when you see one acting like that.. it is pretty easy to tell that something is really wrong.. with tow boys, 6 and 10, out playing making as much noise as mine do.. no normal animal would ever get with in a mile of them!!!

I'm very conscious of animals... Their behavior and especially when they're out and about. I spotted the fox around 5pm not too far from sundown, so it wasn't an unusual time to spot one. Trust me, I looked at that animal REAL well and didn't take my eye off of him :) Too close and he gets introduced to business end of a relic shovel...

"Swiper no swiping" 3X huh??? Gotta try that next time :D

No foam dripping from that fox's lips....just from your fellow treasure hunters!!!
Since I've never found an IH penny and you folks say it can signal strange...think I'll go buy one to set under my coil for training purposes. Maybe once my coil learns the scent, he'll track one down for me!
Very nice finds.
