Found at Early 1800's Homestead - CW Skirmish Site

I dug this piece today at a very old site. There was an early-1800's home on the spot (as evidenced by all the flat button finds), but it was also a field where troops moved as they were involved in a skirmish. I have dug Spanish silver on the spot, as well as a Yankee button, and about 20 flat buttons. Today I also dug a small caliber fired pistol ball and a couple of pieces of lead buck.

I included the war nickel for perspective.

Any ideas are appreciated.

We found a camp guarding a river crossing that had both Confederate and New York troops. One of those came off that site and it was identified as coming off of a journal. They said it was the locking devise off the book. Just telling you what they said. Maybe right, maybe not.

Book clasp. (Not as old as the one pictured, but you get the idea...)
