Found my first 1700's U.S coin...she's a little toasty, but that's ok!

Went out after work today and didn't find anything other than nails. As I'm leaving I walk down the fence line and reading at a 71-74 on the F75 at only a whopping 2 inches down was this 17--? Draped Bust large cent. She's pretty toasty unfortunately, but it is my first 1700's U.S coin so I'll take her! You can just BARELY make out the 7, but it's there! HH

Wow......Bet that called for an underwear change. Congrats on a killer coin.:icon_thumleft:

nice coin great find

killer coin!!!!!!!!!

Matt, any 1700s US coin is a pretty special find. If you find one, chances are it will be a large cent (like you just proved). After that, next most likely is a half cent, then one of the US silvers which are extremely rare compared to the coppers. It doesn't surprise me one bit to see you come up with a 1700s US copper. I know the area where you are hunting & it is rich with colonial thru CW sites, which my main period of interest. Your chances of getting a pre 1810 US silver are really good considering where you live. I have pulled 2 Rev War buttons & a CS tongue from Jeff County WV.

Probably a bit more likely to find a 1700s KG or Spanish silver than a US coin. Either way, a great find and congrats!

WTG & congrats Matt!!! It took me 17 years to dig my first LC. Is there any writing on the edge-like "100 for a dollar"? HH, Quindy.

I'm not 100% certain but I don't think draped bust LCs had edge lettering.

You are right T123. I was thinking Liberty Cap (mine was a 1794). I'm not a coin guy and rarely look for them. Thanks for the good info. HH, Quindy.

Great find! Those edges always work and a lot of people forget that section

Great find - Not many people fine coins in the 1700's

Gorgeous! Congratulaitons!

The 1797 had a "gripped edge" variety. Way to go man that is an awesome coin and oldest large cent out of that field so far!!!

Thanks guys...after further investigation today it appears to be a 1797.
