Friday's CW relics - Lead and a KEEPER!

After work today I hit the spot I've been detecting where they are clearing for a new road. Within 30 minutes I had two CW bullets. Next time I'll try to get a vid of me digging one up. This is the closest I got on film today unfortunately:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-l2GqSlFFE

I found some more asst'd items after the CW bullets including a large chunk of lead, and a coin that turned out to be a 66' Nickel. :tongue3:
One of the bullets is an Enfield with the wood plug still in it! Once it dries a bit, I'll take the plug out to see if there is a # or symbol inside.
A coworker that just ordered a Tesoro like mine showed up to watch me a bit. By this time I was hot, sweaty, and about fed up with those darn gnats. As I worked my way back towards my truck, I got a good signal on a slight dirt hill that was freshly piled up.
About 4" deep I dug up a CW BELT KEEPER!!!
This is the 2nd belt keeper from this site. Bob dug one here last week too. This is only my second belt keeper since I began detecting. Ya-hooo! That makes two knapsack hooks and two belt keepers from this spot along with about 20 bullets.
A pretty good afternoon indeed.
Have a great holiday weekend Folks,
MM

Doug Dude, I love the spot where you are hunting. I enjoyed the video as well, buddy, even though I was hoping for another deep Chinese take-out order. :D

I have a great feeling that you are going to excavate a Seated there and an eagle button or two.

Now, get back out there and dig us some more of that Civil War stuff!

Thanks Guys.
One of these times I'm going to capture a vid of me getting an actual CW relic. Of course when I tried yesterday, after about five attempts of digging everything but, I put the camera away. THEN the belt keeper decides to pop up. ;D
Have a productive w/end.

Re: Friday's CW relics - Lead and a KEEPER!

Doug,

I'm impressed with your knowledge of CW relics, because if I would have dug that out of the ground, it would have gone into my junk bag. ;D But then I'm nowhere near CW territory.

Congrats on finding more keepers. There's gotta be a coin or two around there somewhere.

Thanks Dan.
Funny you should mention that. About A year ago I dug one of those belt keepers and I did throw it away thinking it was junk. :o :'(
It wasn't until Sentinel (Josh) told me what it was that I learned my lesson. :tongue3:
I love this site!!!

Re: Friday's CW relics - Lead and a KEEPER!

I keep all the camp lead I find--but that's because one of these days, Kindafoundabuckle is gonna get the gift of a lead hammer made entirely from CW lead. :)

Charcoal is pretty normal in these finds. If there was a LOT of lead there, they may have thrown the whole crate of ammo in the fire...but most likely the lead just melted around the remains of wood in the fire.

The most impressive chunk of campfire lead I've ever seen was one that was a whole crate of bullets thrown in the fire to avoid their capture. There were partially melted bullets, fully melted ones, etc. It was a whole crate of Williamsons. :o

Camp lead is still a good find--because it tells you more about the layout of the camp.

If you haven't done any research on how a camp was laid out, get on the train. Sounds like you have limited time with the construction.

Thanks BB.
I'll try to find some CW camp info. If Google can't find it, no one can. ;D

P.S. Can't wait to see that lead hammer. :tongue3:

Re: Friday's CW relics - Lead and a KEEPER!

Doug,

First off that is a very IMPRESSIVE spot that you have found so PROPS go to you my friend!!!!

That spot is going to yield you a plate VERY soon I feel. With all the bullets, the belt keepers, melted

lead and the "U.S." Plate Skin....it appears that you have found a campsite. You made a comment the other day that pushed me

towards this conclusion when you said that "You wished that you could find some fired bullets." From what I

have seen and from what you have said, you are finding mainly unfired, dropped minies. This would strongly

suggest that you are on a campsite. :icon_sunny: :icon_king:

As for the lead, I have found several pieces of lead in and around my campsites and a few have bits and

pieces of ash and charcoal in them as well. It seems to me that your theory about a soldier "poking" the melted

lead with a stick is a very feasible one! Indeed, it definitely looks as if it were manipulated by someone and

the wood/ash was stuck into the cooling piece of lead. The lead itself was probably from spill over out of the

mold as the soldiers were sitting around making extra bullets for any number of skirmishes that they were

to encounter there in North Carolina.

Those finds being in such a close proximity is a VERY VERY good sign my friend and I would NOT be surpri

sed at ALL if you post a thread here in the next week or two which reads "AWESOME US BELT PLATE

FOUND" :o :o :o

Great job Doug!

P.S. NICE nab on that Enfield with the Rose Wood Plug still in it...Those are VERY RARE to still find with the

plugs in them. You probably recall last year when I found one and posted it on here...its a very thrilling find. Just

be careful as those plugs slide out very easily once they have dried up. Many of the people I know will take a

small amount of glue and apply it to the inside base to hold the rosewood plug in. Though, if it is marked, than of

course you won't want to do that. Great finds my friend!

Josh,
Thanks so much for the input. This whole road/bridge addition isn't supposed to be done until summer of 09' so I'll be out there all I can.
I gave the guys who own the heavy equipment and the foreman a few bullets and gained a few new friends.
I'm hoping like heck I find an even larger hotspot in the woods next to the existing cleared area. The third phase should turn up some relics too I'm hoping, as it is the other side of the stream.

As far as my plugged Enfields, I've been keeping them in tiny zip-lock bags in case the plugs dry out & fall out.

Have a great weekend Josh.
